Anyway, this thread will be up-dated accordingly so be sure to check back to keep yourself motivated with the latest additions to the festival line-ups (hoping to finally make it this year), and I'm sure the Euro Tour veterans can help with questions anyone may have.

Add Graspop!

I don't think I have a choice in the matter, I'm going next year and we're going to Graspop :D

I doubt I can either. Pretty poor at the moment plus I need to do an army course in early august if I want my $10 grand high readiness reserve bonus. Maybe 2010 if I get that bonus.

Add Tuska and perhaps Sweden Rock :)

On the fence for '09, but I probably will haha. 2 years is too long

Up-Date:

Cathedral (UK) for Wacken & Thyrfing (Swe) for Party San.

Sweden Rock, Tuksa & Graspop festivals added also.

Strongly rumoured for Wacken is AC/DC in addition to Metallica.

Definitely not gonna be able to do it for a few years. I don't think we'll have a crowd as big as last year ever again. There must've been at least 50 people from Perth alone, people I didn't even know were going, or just generally people I didn't even know!!

The lineup certainly has to be something outta this world for me to consider. Cathedral is pretty good though, and its a shame its their only show next summer

im a definite for next year! Also planning a to go through Spain, Portugal and Morocco a month before metal camp, or maybe in between a few festivals for a few weeks. I guess it depends on the line ups. Those keen to come with, let me know!   :D

Alright.

After going through a of festival forums and mentally reliving a lot, a fucking lot, of awesome moments, I'm firmly commiting to my first back-to-back Odyssey and shall be in attendance in 2009 :headbang:

Not sure when I'll head over there but Graspop, Metal Camp and Dong are 100% on the list, with Obscene Extreme and Party San tenative I guess. Not looking to do so much of the trip solo this time because transit and the time to socialise with randoms got pretty long and boring towards the end. Always more fun to have a few traveling mates! Don't really care where we go as long as beers and good muthafucking times are had. I'm gonna try to not lose so many fucking things this time  left half the stuff I brought there I reckon

Who's with me??

To those of you who have been, what would the cost all up be of say 1 month in Europe with a few festivals generally in the same area. This is including airfares and shit. I have no idea how much I'd need for a trip like this. Damn lack of traveling experience
Title: Re: Aussie Euro Tour 2009
Post by: Vixen on October 22, 2008, 07:00:51 AM
we got our return airfares for about $2100 each plus i had about $2K of spending money which i didnt even spend all of still had about 1500 when i returned. Luckily i was getting paid annual leave like a wage every fortnight while away too so that helped and plus the fact that i was preggas so spent fuck all on booze, which is probably different compared to everyone else. I bought about 5 or 6 tshirts and  about 5 cds, but some of the lads got shitloads of stuff, it's up to you what you spend. We tried to stock up on food in between fests from the supermarket too which is a good tip as the food at the fest supermarkets is really pricey...and bring suncream or you'll turn into a lobster!

i did 3 fests in 5 weeks, and it cost $6500, that was about $1000 on merch, if not more, as well as eating out, and other wasteful things, you can do it cheap easily (granted a dont drink, but over there, beer is cheaper than coke)

DUDE, WHEN WE WENT IN 02-04 THE DORRA WAS BETWEEN 0.55 AND 0.63c.

GRANTED OF COURSE THERE HAVE BEEN INFLATIONARY PRESSURES SINCE THAT PERIOD (I.E. EVERYWHERE HAS UPPED THE PRICE OF PISS AND EVERYTHING ELSE) SO TAKING THAT INTO ACCOUNT - $6K IS A MORE "COMFORTABLE" FIGURE :P

OF COURSE, I SPENT WELL OVER THAT BUT I WAS PRETTY SELF-INDULGENT - HEY.... WHAT THE FUCK, IM ON HOLIDAYS RIGHT?? :P

Title: Re: Aussie Euro Tour 2009
Post by: Strangey on October 24, 2008, 03:48:52 AM
Yeah i spent a lot, and staying in the same place for festivals is smart. Bugger spending a few days somewhere then flying to the next location repeating that over and over,
you get really run down especially if it is your first time doing the euro tour.

And definitely go to Prague, ha ha!
Title: Re: Aussie Euro Tour 2009
Post by: littlewing on October 24, 2008, 04:35:40 PM
I spent 3 years saving and I sold my car before going, but I was planning a two year working stint. I went away with about $13 000, and after 3 months backpacking I still had $7 500 in the bank. I ended up doing 5 festivals so its possible to do it relatively cheap!

Now if only i still had that money now....
Tip: dont come to England, Aussie to Pound conversion is fucking shite

Thanks for the info guys. I don't drink anyway so it'll be a lot cheap ;)

I'm hoping to go for 09' with my misses but that just depends on how much work she gets as she is only doing relief teaching at the moment. We'll also be looking for people to tag along with as we have never been before so I'll keep everyone posted on how things are going over the next few months.

Seeing as Wade can't keep up, which is cool, I'll update everyone with the lineups so far, well for the fests that most people are interested in anyway:

OBSCENE EXTREME 09 (July 16 - July 18):
40% Gradi
Blood Duster (Aussie represent  :headbang:)
Captain Cleanoff
Jig-Ai
Mob 47
Slavebreed

Early days yet, but I'm already fairly intreged.  3 fairly solid bands (Duster, Cleanoff and Jig-Ai) and it seems to be a good festival to check out new bands if you're into grind.  If other fests around this time prove to be good then I'll be hitting this one up for sure.  Plus I've never been to this fest and always up for something fresh.  Heard this is an awesome fest also.

WACKEN 09 (July 30 - Aug 1):
Amon Amarth
Cathedral
Einherjer
HammerFall
In Extremo
In Flames
Kampfar
Korpiklanni
Machine Head
Tristania
Walls of Jericho (the only band I wouldn't mind seeing that I haven't already seen.  See if the female frontman actually has it and isn't an Angela rip off)

For it's 20th Anniversary the lineup is looking pretty weak at the moment, heading more and more into mainstream every year.  So far it's a definite no from me.

PARTY SAN 09 (Aug 6 - Aug 8 ):
Unleashed
Swallow The Sun
Thyrfing
Satyricon
Marduk
Shining
Den Saakaldte

Party San as always is going to be another year of extreme metal leaning more towards black metal.  Usually produce fairly good European death metal bands as well but so far it's pretty much all black.  Even if the lineup is mainly tr00 black metal this is still my favourite fest and will always be a place for good times.  Positives are that the markets and stage is all in the same area with the markets around the stage and the stage being at the bottom of a hill so even you small metalheads will be able to see the stage show.  Again it will all depend on the lineup and the fests around this time if I go or not.

Early days though people but if you are considering to go to Wacken then I'd get your tickets very soon.  This year it sold out in March so I'd be quick.  Also book your flights before Christmas, usually you get a pre-Crissie deal or some shit.

If you wanted to make me cry, mission accomplished..  :(

Bands I'd pay a rediculous amount of money to be able to see again are

Amorphis
Amon Amarth
Corvus Corax
Misery Index
Wintersun

Fat chance 4/5 of those bands coming to Perth ever.

Bands I'd just generally murder to see on that list are:

Beneath the Massacre
Hate Eternal
Vader

OK to get the ball rollin' on booking shit, how do we feel about heading to Antwerp, Belgium (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/belgium/flanders/antwerp) pre-Graspop?

Sophie mentioned it to me before and I reckon it's a pretty good idea, place looks scenic as hell. I'm at work (on a slow as fuck computer), so I can't do much in terms of legwork at the moment to scope it, but I've seen here (http://www.hostelworld.com/availability.php/Abhostel-Antwerp-16593) a pretty great looking hostel. ~AU$35 a night, damn good rating, next to Antwerpen-Centraal station etc.

I'll be rolling into Belgium before you guys are done in Hellfest (I'll be there on the 20th), so that'd be 5 nights for me and 2 or 3 nights for you before pissing off to Graspop on the morning of the 25th.

In terms of getting from Graspop to Slovenia/Metal Camp, after a talk with SOD I'm going to have to scope it a fair bit longer before I propose anything haha, urgh. I'm keen to stay in Ljubljana for the 2 nights before heading to Tolmin, but I think headin' to Lake Bled is also do-able, if a bit of a fuck around getting to there from Jesenice via bus and back again to Tolmin.

After that I hear Trease 'n Lenni are goin to Spain-ward and Kylee/Erik/Sophie are going to Croatia?

Nope not going to Spain anymore! I am finding it tough to live in London AND save for the festivals, so will only be looking at doing just the three, and then will probably get back home straight after metal camp.
Will be going up for Bloodstock in England later on in August though so if there are still any aussie stragglers over that way at that time let me know.
As far as the festivals at the moment (Hellfest, Graspop and metal camp) it will be me, Sophie, Kylee, Lenni, Ama and Paul...

Thought Erik was coming with Kylee? *shrugs*

Sounded like we were all intending to head in different directions post-MC anyway. Might look at to see what the Eastern block can offer me for a few days...

So yeah, what do you reckon about Antwerp, Trease? Looks s'well from my end. Transport to and from there'll be free thanks to the Graspop ticket. Also, pre-sale for GP goes on at the 18th.

From what I'm seeing, GP to MC is going to be bad  Headin' to Bruxelles International afterwards sounds good on paper, but the more I look the less feasible it seems. Hell, even getting to Munich and then Ljubljana via train will probably spill into a two day trip, which isn't too surprising because they're seperated by about 1000km as the bird flies. Perhaps a night spent in Munich? We'll see. We know it's worth the effort :headbang:

In related awesome news, RAGE have been given the Open Ended Set at Dong! Better do some homework on some of their more obscure, "haven't played in 10 years" songs

I love Metal Camp as much as anyone especially as an ideal getaway place, but seriously there lineups are never anything really to run home about.  5 days of music with only roughly 5 decent bands doesn't really make a great festival but maybe that's just me.  It is good however for the atmosphere.

Fuckin' bullshit, I thought PSOA 2008 stank, the vast majority of the lineup was boring as, dismal.. Now this!!!!!

We must have been at two different Party San 08's cause I had a blast and the lineup was sweet as.  Behemoth, Lividity, Obituary, Bloodbath, Dismember, Deadborn (featuring ex-members of Necrophagist), the mad "chook-off" for General Surgery.

+Facebreaker , Hail of Bullets, Bolt Thrower ... Nagal Food.... the list goes on

FUCK YES!!!!!!!!
Now all I need is cash :-(

How much do you think I may need Terry? Doing Hellfest, Graspop and Metal camp on the cheap this year.
I spent bulk last year but it was at the start of my trip so I splashed out a lot...

I stand by my original comment.. What you named we'd either seen numerous times before or just didn't interest me in the slightest, nor was there a decent well known black metal band on the bill in 08 ala Dark Funeral.

The 09 lineup is miles ahead of the 08 lineup..

Fuck.. wish I was going to Metalcamp now, that line up is shitloads better than last year. Would make the unnecessary length of the fest to good band ratio worth it.

For anybody who is only being held back from doing this by the cost of airfare

Singapore Airlines has some great deals going right now online

I typed in 2 random dates that would allow someone to do the Wacken/Party San/ Summerbreeze trifecta and the total cost of airfare was $1356.68. That's out of Perth July 27 and departing Germany Aug 17

INCLUDES ALL TAXES AND CHARGES

ABSOLUTE BARGAIN

And with a top airline too

So if you're borderline going, then it's time to fish or cut bait   :P

This man knows !

Just saw this Wacken announcement :

Quote
According to Reuters, fans attending this year's Wacken Open Air festival in Germany were asked on Thursday (July 30) to avoid "hugging, kissing on the cheek, and shaking hands" lest they spread the H1N1 influenza. On its web site, the health ministry of Germany's northern Schleswig-Holstein region optimistically advised revelers to restrain from any such sociable behavior so as to minimize the infection risk at the festival, which runs until August 1.

It also recommended fans did not share bottles of beer.

"We know that kissing and what have you can't be ruled out," said ministry spokesman Oliver Breuer. "They're just tips."

Tip to dyson @ SBOA in a fortnights time:  Hugging, hand shaking and kissing on the cheek IST VERBOTEN, but having your pole smoked in your teeny tiny tent by the ugliest east german weightlifting shloke you can stuff in there is OK.

The Magic Circle festival is being tacked onto the end of Metal Camp in Tolmin :o

Quote
We are proud to announce a ?very special guest' who will destroy Tolmin on Sunday, 11th of July 2010 - the day after regular METALCAMP ends - the biggest real TRUE METAL band in the world - the mighty Kings Of Metal MANOWAR and their Magic Circle Festival!

A collaboration which has never happened before - a Festival joins forces with another Festival.

Joey DeMaio himself heard about the wonderful METALCAMP and from that moment on he realized that this is the best place in the world to have a Magic Circle Festival in 2010 -  so we started discussions...

We loved the idea of presenting to our loyal METALCAMPERS the real ?Kings Of Metal' and to the MANOWARRIORS of the world the wonderful METALCAMP. So we sat together and started to discuss how we could make this happen. It was not easy; it needed compromises and new ideas. But where there's a will, there's a way, and so we finally came to an agreement.

So we now have an extended METALCAMP, with the Magic Circle Festival added as an extra option for all you METALCAMPERS out there. This is how we keep it up to you guys - you decide if you want to stay for 1 or 6 days. Anything you want is possible. More metal is always better!

As we all know, the football world cup final game will also be on 11th July. We will broadcast the final game, during that time there will be no program on both stages and after the game MANOWAR will celebrate with you and show you who the kings of METAL truly are. We promise - this will be an absolutely magic moment - a day to remember.

More artists and events are still to be confirmed for both stages on that day - so stay tuned.

Continuing in the tradition of the Magic Circle Festival, MANOWAR will do an autograph session on Friday 9th of July as well all of the crazy activities you've come to know and love about the Magic Circle Festival. So don't miss this chance to meet and talk to the Kings Of Metal.

Tickets for the "Magic Circle Festival at Metalcamp" on Sunday, 11th July cost ? 60 and will also be limited to 12,000.

Hell on Earth - Hell over Paradise!!!

This... This is like some beautiful dream :'(
