The biggest night of the local metal calendar is almost upon us again, and this year it is going to be bigger than ever.
The awards night will be held at Metropolis in Perth on Friday July 17!
This is our chance to show everyone what the underground metal scene has to offer, so I'm calling on every band and every regular to spread the word and get as many people as possible down to the show to blow the lid off the joint.
This is a huge opportunity for the metal scene and local bands, so if it goes well then I'll have the opportunity to put on more shows at Metros in the future. Any bands hoping to take a step up and get the chance to play on a big stage now is the time to invest in your own future prospects.

13 was an exageration but its fuckin expensive either way....i think on thursday night at vool i paid 9 bucks for a TED's.
Needless to say i only drank one beer that night.

last time I went to a gig at metros they charge $8 or $10 for a plastic cup of mixer or beer.

I just asked for the main auditorium but on the contract they put the whole venue. :P
I expect they'll only have the bar downstairs open though.
And yes, in negotiating things I mentioned that metalheads drink heaps, as long as it isn't overpriced. We were meant to be getting a sponsorship thing with a brewery but it's taking a while, so I've been told there should be cheaper priced beer in general.
Both of which can't be advertised anyway, unless we want liquor and licensing to try to shut things down. Feel free to spread it by mouth of word though. ;)

For the sake of metal in this state, evrybody should go to this gig.
A good response here will solidify metal music as a viable source of revenue for clubs as well as a source of entertainment for the rest of us.
Times are tough, and venues are being very conservative with their cashflow right now. Unfortunately, most decent venues around town are still of the mindset that heavy metal shows are too much effort to put on, with small crowd response and violent break-outs - ie a liability.
Having such an awesome venue with which to host these awards has to be seen as a huge achievement for metal ALREADY, but to make it a successful, well attended show could really open some avenues for metal.
When we have touring rock/prog/hardcore/metal bands, venues like this are usually packed, so I ask you all: "Can we not get them all back down for ONE significant night on the local roster?" Is it not too much to ask to grab a hold of those lame-ass friends you all have that 'claim' to follow metal, but only really come out to support the touring acts?
Daz, let me just say - YOU deserve the awards, and youve earnt the respect - Ive put shows like this on and I know what a mindscrew it can be coordinating something of this magnitude. You deserve props, not just for this awards night - but for (essentially) single-handedly guiding and supporting the entire metal scene for as long as I can remember (With the help of brothers Clay and Dave, of course!)
Even when I was out playing regular shows in 1996 and 1997 you guys were around helping me and others to get shows when we really had no idea what we were doing - And often when everyone else shut their doors to this kind of music. Your help is not something I would easily forget. Youve never asked anything in return and have always sunk your own time, sweat and shitloads of cash into this endeavour, in the hope that we may have a stronger scene to share in.
Well, we DO have a strong scene thanks to you, so take a bow mate - And for the rest of us who have benefitted from Daz's passion, its time to give something back. Be there, support the show, buy Darren a drink and be appreciative that someone like him exists. Without him, Clay and Dave, Western Front would not have made it to 2009, and many of us would have far few gigs to notch into our belts, if any at all.

I'm just happy to do what I can to promote the bands and the metal scene. I'm not doing it for recognition but I do appreciate it when people commend me or say thanks for doing what I do - it does make it feel a bit more worthwhile, although the state of the metal scene being as healthy as it is these days does that quite well too. :)
Having said that, it was awesome and accomplished metal musicians such as yourself Damo, and many others that frequent these pages, that caused me to sit up and take notice and realise it was all well worth promoting and made me want to do whatever I could to see that done.
So thanks to you, the other musicians involved in the scene, past and present, and of course the fans that come along time after time to support it.
Let's face it, we all rule. Brothers and sisters of metal united!

Top night, and was worth waking up hungover at 6:30 this morning for work. Congrats to Lacrymae on both an epic set (the large stage and acoustics suits the music perfectly) and the awards. Watching Benno pretend to ride a horse during the set was one of the funniest things I've seen.

Sounds like it was an awesome night. Unfortunately i couldnt make it due to flying out to melbourne on the night. Good work and congrats to all the winners especially Lacrymae for i feel you guys deserve the +1 to GOOD prog power and music in Perth.
Also congratulations to Louis for taking out best drummer. A well deserved award and also Frankie and Ago for gathering votes for the amazing vocalist duo they are!
Melbourne is pretty cool anyway, but id like to have left a day later. Fuck.

Daz probably won't tell you all the hidden costs that venue pulled out of the fine print to screw him over, but I can tell you that he had to outlay for the ENTIRE PA (Aiden set it up for him, good work too!) and they even wanted to bill him another $900 for the use of the lights. :o
The Western Front awards is meant to be a showcase of the year's bands, but also pays for the cost of running the site that we all need to keep the scene functioning. Despite the decent croud, he will be lucky to break even on this due to all the Metro swindling, so Western Front is going to have to be funded completely out of Daz's pocket the next 12 months....
Or we could have a benefit gig.
I know my band would be happy to donate its time to this, any other bands want to do a gig to support the Font and the Daz?

I was talking to him backstage and he pretty much got shafted money wise.
It was an excellent show, probably the best turnout and atmosphere I've seen at a local show, but it's not fair that he got caught out like that. A benefit gig is a great idea and we'd be in for sure

Daz probably won't tell you all the hidden costs that venue pulled out of the fine print to screw him over, but I can tell you that he had to outlay for the ENTIRE PA (Aiden set it up for him, good work too!) and they even wanted to bill him another $900 for the use of the lights. :o
The Western Front awards is meant to be a showcase of the year's bands, but also pays for the cost of running the site that we all need to keep the scene functioning. Despite the decent croud, he will be lucky to break even on this due to all the Metro swindling, so Western Front is going to have to be funded completely out of Daz's pocket the next 12 months....
Or we could have a benefit gig.
I know my band would be happy to donate its time to this, any other bands want to do a gig to support the Font and the Daz?
Lets set up a donation or pass the hat around?? Count me in for some.
I think a WF Fundraising gig would be sweet and I know Dethlahem would be happy to play (providing i'm not away at work)

On a personal note, i'd like to thank Daz for not only the great showcase of talent on Friday night, but also his ongoing involvement in the local scene. His efforts cannot go unrewarded. So the benefit gig is a great idea.
Daz dont even think about giving me any DJing money. Keep it mate.
As for the venue, well it was a great to see a "Metal night of nights" type concept being very well received by the public, on the big stage, but it did come at a cost.
As much as I hate to admit, we really needed a disco afterwards, to swell the numbers more towards the end and that would've provided a better financial buffer there with $$$. I cant believe a club like that didn't have anything happening afterwards.
Capitol would be the best fit for next year for mine.

Yeah, Metro's is a seriously awesome venue for metal. Can't say the same about the management, but the place itself is brilliant.
Even if it was a one off thing, Daz definitly made this years awards night one to remember!

It was an awesome night! Great venue with very good acoustics, that is unfortunately wasted on angry Asian youths on Saturday nights who've got too much money to spare. It is such a pity that Metros was trying to swindle Daz out of his money, fucking bouncers seemed like they couldn't wait to get us out of there either.
Having a benefit gig would be a fantastic idea imo, pretty sure all the Perth metal bands would agree to that. On top of that, the word of WF should spread through out the rest of Australia. Seemingly WA seems to have the most organized metal scene in Australia (but I probably don't know the right forums to go to).

Metro City has that awesome massive fucking stage... such a shame it's normally wasted. On the whole though it seems pretty run down - that whole ATM thing was a joke, I bet they could have doubled their bar takings if people had ready access to cash. And what's with the floor in there? Yuck.

I think the gig was great but realistically capitol would have been more fitting and equally as much of a drawcard.
As much as i love the idea of metal gigs being at metro city, i cant see it being financially viable unless you can pull at least 1000 through the door, which is rarely going to happen for local shows.
Unless Darren had some sort of better deal going on then by all means...more gigs at metro city!

I actually found the venue a little weird and intimidating. I mean, it was very big, and the big stage was great..... but I felt like I should be wearing a skimpy cocktail dress w/ sky-high heels and doing coke in the bathroom/talking to boys with fast cars.
So yeah, it has its pros and cons :P

Ok here is the deal - I'm business savvy enough to not hinge the hopes of not running at a loss on the neccessity of a large turn out. I knew doing the show at this venue would be a slight gamble in perhaps not the same numbers at the familiar venues it's been held at in the past - Amplifier and Capitol, but I negotiated a deal that wouldn't be a loss, and I thought it would be worth it to give local metal a chance on a big stage normally reserved for internation touring acts (there is local metal that has just the same calibre if not better than some). The turn out was still very good for a local show, and management told me they were impressed with how strong the following is for metal compared to other local music styles - hip hop / rock / pop, and the numbers were actually more than some international acts that had been through recently.
The trouble came in with issues I was not made aware of until the last minute, and if I'd be able to factor them in from the start it wouldn't be so bad. I was only made aware on Tuesday that Metros has NO audio gear on stage whatsoever, only the front of house speakers etc. So I had to organise and hire all the foldbacks, mics, stands, cables, effects, mixing desk, technician to deliver and set it up, and a sound engineer for the night.
Huge thanks to Luke and CCA Productions for the gear and set up for a great price, he helped out a lot as he realised the predicament and is familiar with the metal scene. Also to Aidan for doing the sound and helping out with that.
Then I only found out the day before that they don't even have a drum riser there, so that had to be hired and delivery organised on the day, otherwise you would hardly have been able to see the drummers. Thanks to Mark De Vattimo and Metal Mike from Psychonaut for helping out with that. THEN just before the first band was set to start they told me they were planning on charging me $500 for using the lighting rig! Thanks to Beth for doing the lighting on the night and going in beforehand to try set it up.
So for the turnout we got if I'd done the show at Amplifier or Capitol again it would have cost just over $340, doing it at Metros - add an extra $3000 (Keep in mind that is with me wheeling and dealing to get things a lot cheaper).
We sold out Amplifier last year and they actually had to turn people away because they were at capacity. This year I thought perhaps doing it there again, but maybe move it to a larger venue such as Capitol or somewhere else. I contacted the booking agent for Amplifier / Capitol at the start of the year and was told "We have too much metal here this year so we're going to have to pass."
I said that I thought the idea of a venue was to have the maximum amount of people in there and buying drinks, regardless of what style event was on, but he said the owners wanted to share it between other styles. He suggested doing it at the Rocket Room, which although is a great place, is no where near big enough, to which they said to do it over 2 nights. :P
Anyway I left it at that, but a couple of days later he emailed me saying he'd had a rethink and thought maybe he was being a bit harsh and shouldn't penalise people with a good track record. I was already a bit soured after this and then this opportunity at Metros came up and I thought what the hell.
At this stage I haven't made a loss, but I also haven't gotten to pay the bands yet. If I paid them what I wanted to pay them then I would be losing money. I still haven't done the full calculations as I'm waiting on another couple of things, but I could probably still pay them maybe $200 each and not make a loss (which I guess is more they they might get from some other gigs, but as I said not as much as I'd like to pay). That would mean I'd probably just break even, though not get much for my time, petrol, phone calls, etc, or to help fund the running costs of WF, which is what the awards show generally doubles for.
Anyway I might just do something like that and organise a separate fund raiser show later on. I consider the awards show as a success, in that it went smoothly once it was on, and all the bands seemed to enjoy it and the crowd seemed to get into it as well. It was just all the last minute ambush of things and costs on me which put me in a somewhat foul mood and kinda ruined my night. It's not my place to complain though, I did it for the bands and the fans, and hopefully it showed people what is possible and gave some more credibility to the local scene.
Goatlady, that review is great - thanks for that. I also have a review done by WF founder Warmaster, who graced the awards show with his presence which I will put up soon. He must have been amped up by it as had arrived in my inbox by 4am the next morning. ;D

Yeah, I can understand that. I would be hard pressed to tell you who I was standing next to while watching Lacrymae, as I find their music so engrossing, while for a band that I don't find as interesting I could probably recount exactly where everyone else was standing!

See i find them engorssing... for a while...but not for a whole set... hell sometimes not even for a whole song.
While all members obviously have their chops(esp the vocals). I think the songs suffer a lack of tempo dynamic... all their songs seem to plod along in that same mid pace rarely straying either way & while there is some cool stuff going on at times, I always seem to have lost interest by songs middle/end

Smitty, all seriousness, criticism is always appreciated. I agree with you, this is being currently being rectified with the new material. There's fast shit. There's definitely more influence from symphonic bands like Stormlord and mid-late Dimmu creeping into the stuff we're writing now. We're after a huge dramatic sound, think of a filmscore / band hybrid.
On the other side there'll likely be jazz passages springing up in odd places :lol:
Give it a bit of time so we can orchestrate it and polish it all up - this takes a while unfortunately, but I don't want to be unveiling anything lacklustre. Should be good in time.
