Title: TV Shows.
Post by: Catalyst on July 14, 2009, 03:26:20 AM
My lady and I have a routine that every night that we are both home we watch a TV show together, not a piece of shit but a show with something good about it.  We are running out of good shows to watch.  Currently we have got complete - or up to date - series' of the following shows on DIVX:

Absolutely Fabulous, Alias, American Dad, Black Books, Band of Brothers, the Brak Show, Blackadder, Bottom, Californication, Curb your Enthusiasm, Carnivale, Dead like Me, the Dead Zone, Deadwood, Dexter, Dilbert, Entourage, Family Guy, Futurama, Firefly, Heroes, the Goodies (seriously incomplete), Invader Zim, Men Behaving Badly, the Mighty Boosh, Metalocalypse, My name is Earl, NCIS, Oblongs, Red Dwarf, Ren and Stimpy, Rome, Scrubs, the Shield, Seinfeld, Shameless, Sons of Anarchy, South Park, Squidbillies, Star Wars - the clone wars, 24, Supernatural, the Simpsons (up to season 14 only), the Sopranos, Terminator - the Sarah Connor Chronicles, Tintin, True Blood, the Wire,Weeds (edit), X-files, the Young ones,  heaps and heaps more.

And then there's the shit that I avoid watching with her, stuff like One Tree Hill, Sex and the City, Melrose Place, 21 Jump Street, Summer Heights High, Kath and Kim, the OC and lots of either girly or agonisingly cringeful stuff..

HBO is bringing out some good looking shows in the coming year, in particular "Pacific" looks like a corker, but in the meantime I am wondering have any of you heard about any shows she and I should be checking out?

I'm a big fan of The IT Crowd. Oh, and I notice you're lacking in the Beavis & Butt-Head department too. Sarah Silverman is not too bad either, if you're in the right mood.

Check out Arrested Development its pretty decent. Though Men Behaving Badly is one of the best shows ever made so i don't know how you could find anything funny after watching that.

never seen them, so cant comment dude.

How about some of the other old classics like Home Improvement?

I dont think so Tim.

A while ago I downloaded that old show 'Dinosaurs'. The first 2 series. I thought it was just some dumb kids show, but wanted to get all nostalgic... as it turns out, its actually quite funny.

Seconding Arrested Development, a show that is funny on so many levels with jokes that often reference back to previous seasons, and rewards many repeat viewings. Easily one of my favourite shows of all time. Also for HBO fans sick of cliched cop dramas in the vein of Law and Order and CSI, I highly recommend The Wire. I just picked up seasons 2, 3 and 4 from JB's for only $40 (buy 2, get 1 free).

Ah, I suggest that you watch both Band of Brothers and Californication now! Band of Brothers is a series based on WWII...pretty bloody good, produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg.

Californication is really really funny. David Duchovny is great in it, there is heaps of sex, drugs and rock and roll (Henry Rollins is in one episode, and the names of the main characters books are Slayer song titles), also quite a few references to metal in it as well (as David is a pretty big metal fan himself). The first episode starts off with him getting a BJ from a nun...you can't get any better than that :headbang:

OZ! Such a great show!  :o

My main TV loves are sitcoms and crime/thriller dramas.
I would recommend Bones, Law and Order SVU, Starsky and Hutch, Carpoolers, Double The Fist, Numbers, Family Ties, Monkey, Degrassi Junior High/High, Shaun The Sheep, City Homicide and Criminal Minds.

Shaun The Sheep

hahaha...classic! I love that shit, and of course, Wallace and Grommit.

Hmmmm How to reply to everyone at once...

Frisky Dingo?  Sounds odd, I'll check it out.
The Wire is probably one of the best shows ever made, got the first 4 seasons.
House of Saddam?  What the fuck is that?
Never seen Oz, I am told it is great but prison shows freak me out.
Watched Underbelly on the tube, don't have it on DVIX yet.
Red DRAWF?  Is that a spook or a misspelling?
Ali G, fuck no, can't stand the guy.
Fat Pizza!  Forgot all about that, gotta get some.
Shaun the sheep? What?
Tried Numbers and Criminal minds, didn't grab me.
Arrested Development, eh?  Seen the ads.  Will check it out.
Monkey!!!  Wow, that is one fucked up show, gotta get some.
Aqua Tean hunger Force confuses me, I can't work it out at all.
Dead Set is bizarre.  Daz brings me shows like that, and plenty of other weiiiird shit.

I had a look through our collection, there are a lot of shows on DVD that I haven't got around to processing to DIVX yet, amongst them are seasons of Freeks and Geeks, Kindred-the embraced, Spongebob Squarepants, Dark Angel, the Vicar of Dibly, Battlestar Gallacctica, the Unit, Lexx, the Brittas Empire, Filthy Rich and Catflap, American Gothic, Beavis and Butthead, Married with Childen, Melrose Place, Kingswood Country, Popetown, Open all hours, the Secret Life of us, Love my way, Believe Nothing, Poltergiest- the Legacy, TMNT, Brotherhood, Little Britain, and probably plenty more.  Needless to say, they aren't all winners.

Some cartoon shows I want to get episodes of are Tripping the Rift, Quads!, Harvey Birdman, Attourney at Law, Drawn Together, the Tick and others I can't remember for the life of me.

If anyone has some cool shit and they want to trade files, I'm interested.

I didn't read what anyone else said, so I've probably repeated a few, but here's some to try: The IT Crowd, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, Arrested Development, Outrageous Fortune, Skins, Father Ted, All Aussie Adventures, Clerks (as in the animated series based on the movie), Life Support, Spaced, Double The Fist, The Lano and Woodley Show.

There's more but I lost interest.

Oh look you just posted something.

The Tick is cool, same with The Maxx.

Oh and Freaks and Geeks isn't terrible if that's on your "to maybe watch" list.

And as with any show worth watching, Aqua Teen Hunger Force only makes (some) sense in sequence.

Frisky Dingo?  Sounds odd, I'll check it out. Yeah, its a good cartoon, only two seasons though :( Should have been more. Can pick this up from torrents or the DVDS from JB HiFi

House of Saddam?  Mini series based on Saddam Husseins raise to power, pretty good if you're into that kind of stuff.

Red DRAWF?  Is that a spook or a misspelling? Sorry, that was meant to be Red Dwarf :p

Also, if you are into good WWII Stuff, try the Hitler: Rise of Evil (2 part TV Movie) and Der Untergang (Downfall). Both are about 3 hours long, so always a good time killer :)

I also have a heap of documentries on WWII and stuff like James Camerons' Expedition - Bismarck, so if you dig that stuff, I can give you some names of some good ones to get :)

I would definetly second Oz, i am currently watching the series for a 3rd time, it is really fucking good show, especially if you enjoyed sorpranos

Reaper is a pretty cool show that has unfortunately been cancelled. about a guy who finds out his parents sold his soul to satan before he was born and he has to be hells bounty hunter, really original and pretty funny

Breaking Bad is a show i have just started watching, seen about 4 episodes, about a chemistry teacher who finds out he is going to die and wants to make money for his family, so he starts cooking meth.

Quantum Leap is an old show about a quantum physicist who tries creating a time machine but it back fires, and it teleports him into someones body, and he has to fix some problem, then he hops to another body and fixes that problem. Pretty good

Twilight Zone and Outer Limits - im sure i dont need to explain those

I won't repeat the ones you already said Jez, but most of what Matt said are tops.

I'm sure I told you about Arrested Development years ago.. one of the best comedy series, and as mentioned it has so many levels and you get even more out of it with repeated viewing. I have all the seasons of it so I can give you a copy.
Flight of the Conchords is classic, I have the two seasons of that for ya.

The UK version of Life on Mars was cool.. didn't get a chance to see much of the US version but as much as I'm hesitant at the US track record of failing at redoing UK shows, the fact it has Harvey Kietel and Michael Imperioli is enough to make me interested to check it out.
Fairly sure you wouldn't handle Oz that well, for the (apparently) obligatory naked blokes and prison man rape etc. I gave it a bit of a chance and saw some potential but it didn't really strike me that much in what I saw to outweigh the previous factor.

As far as other comedies go - 30 Rock, The Hollowmen, Wilfred, (already gave ya Garth Marenghi's Dark Place I believe), Nathan Barley, and there isn't too much to it but Jack of All Trades is a good light hearted laugh, just for Bruce Campbell as the lead being as corny but cool as only he can.  8)

Yeah, Naked blokes don't bother me that much because every fucking show seems to do it now, but I just can't handle seeing guy on guy action, it totally horrifies me.

yeah neither can I, but it is really isnt that bad, theres only a few makeout sessions, couple of off camera blowjobs, and a few rape scenes, nothing overly visual, no where near as bad as Queer as Folk

thats the exact same way I feel about it... same as shows like The King Of Queens. I wouldnt say I like it, but if its on I dont feel compelled to change the channel, and usually find myself laughing at least a few times throughout an episode.

for the record, dont know if its your thing Jez, but...

Jackass
Viva La Bam
Wild Boys
Dirty Sanchez
and best of all, The Dudesons

always good for a light hearted, albeit sometimes cringe worthy laugh. Im also hooked on the LA, Miami and to a lesser extent, London Ink programs lately too. Problem is Ive seen pretty much all of them at least 2 or 3 times each.

Of course, Mythbusters and Top Gear, Street Customs, American Chopper and the swag of other hot rodding type shows are always entertaining too, but most chicks dont really dig that shit as much as us boys.

Miami Ink's problem is it focuses too much on the 'tragedy' behind each tattoo (every bloody tattoo on that show is being done because it's a tribute to a dead sibling/friend/whatever and their life story which noone cares about), while LA Ink's problem is that it focuses too much on when the girls got their periods or what shoes they're skipping work to go buy.

If the shows were more about the tattoos and the process of designing them and putting them on people then I think they would be a million times better.

Yeah, I tend to agree, but generally block those tidbits out of my mind. London Ink focuses more on the tattoo, but I just cant stand that Louis cunt... and it does focus too much on him bitching about Dan and vice versa. Still, they produce some fucking stellar art work, on all shows.

Miami - Chris Garver is the best, hands down. Tim Hendricks (was a guest for a few episodes in season 4) kicks arse too, but he doesnt really count.
LA - Kat for black and grey portraits (but she's a one trick pony), Hannah for pretty much anything else.
London - Louis is an over rated fuck, but Phil Kyle's old-school style is just killer!

I think with Criminal Minds you need to see the right episode to get you started. There is a great episode guest starring Jamie Kennedy - playing a cannibal serial killer with hilarious results.

The Wire In The Blood is good, but the novels are so great I couldn't really get into it.

Arrested Development is one of the best shows ever made. I just got a Gobias Industries shirt.

I am actually really enjoying Big Bang Theory at the moment too.

I think the original Life On Mars was better, the only good US remake I've seen is The Office. Which is fucking hilarious.

Dwight Schrute FTW!

Nearly forgot. Two and a Half Men. ;D

that show is really funny, yet really shit, interesting combination....
I think it's meant to be a parody of Charlie Sheens life style of drinking and womanising. Now that he's come clean he's poking fun at himself. Altho it's pretty much based on the Odd couple. Altho the newer episodes are kinda shit. Most of those kind of shows tend to go to shit after a few seasons.

Yeah, I find that wierd that people can like one of those shows (when they are pretty much all the same style anyway) and not the other.

It's the same as if you like Family Guy, but hate American Dad...pretty much the same show, just with different characters

I don't like Birdman much, has it's moments though. I don't like Space Ghost either, another one of those types of shows.

And I'll agree that American Dad and Family Guy are quite similar.. they both started going crap at the same time!

Family Guy season 7 is fucking terrible.

I don't generally work much in winter being as my job is seasonal, but with other guys on holidays I hsve found myself minding the shop full-time at the moment.  Being as there is nothing much to do, I have been spending all day lying on a couch in the kiddie corner watching DVD's all day.  Yesterday and today, I watched the entire series of "Band of Brothers" for the second time, and just like last time I found it a devastating experience.  I don't know if it had that effect on anyone else, but to me it is one of the most amazing portayals of war I have ever seen, beautifully crafted and elegantly horrifying.  It reminds you of the reality of warfare and the bloodprice people have paid for their countries.
Now HBO are in the process of making Band of "Brothers - Pacific", a 10 part miniseries based on the war against the Japanese, and from the trailers it looks like it will at the least be a match for the original.  Filmed mainly in Australia and directed by Steven Speilberg and Tom Hanks again, it started with a budget of $US100 million but has now apparently blown out to almost double that.   It will be shown on the 7 network next year around March if the net has the facts right.

I can't wait.

Pool Technician.  I make my year's pay in the first four months of the summer season, then slack off for the rest.
It isn't all good though, there are only two pillows and the doona is orange and blue, doesn't suit my complexion one bit.  I also drink too many Dark and Stormies and that leads to excessive nana napping.

On the comedy channel on sunday nights they have started playing "The Best of the Brits" hosted by Hale and Pace. it features Black Adder (pretty funny), the 2 Ronnies (naturally) and Men Behaving Badly, starting with the very first episode of the first season. I only liked it from series 2 onwards, because its Tony that makes that show, but after watching the first episode, I was pleasantly surprised at how many times it actually had me laughing, even with plebby old Dermot instead of Tony.

I don't understand itl.  I'm just typing like normal but these boxes just keep popping up.

It's a plot to send me wiggy, but I shall never surrender.
I shall go on to the end.  I shall fight in France.  I shall fight on the seas and oceans. I shall fight with growing confidence and strenght in the air.  I shall defend my brain whatever the costs may be.  I will fight them on the beaches, I shall fight them on the landing grounds, I shall fight in the fields and the streets.  I will fight in the hill, I shall NEVER surrender.  And IF, although I do not for a moment believe, this brain - or a large part of it - was subjugated and starving and our empire beyond the seas armed and guarded by the British Fleet will carry on the struggle, until in God's good time,  the new world with all its power and might with....

Damn.  Even Winston himself couldn't talk up the fight to save MY brain.

I don't know how many of you out there read this stuff, but fans of Ramond Fiest, Robert Jordan, Ian Irvine and the like would be well aware of George R.R. Martin and his series "a Game of Thrones", possibly the bloodthirstiest story of the genre.  You may NOT know however, that HBO has made a deal to buy the saga and is currently filming the shows.  HBO is of course responsible for such classic and extremely high budget shows as Deadwood, the Wire, Rome, the Sopranos, True Blood, Band of Brothers, Carnivale, Entourage and heaps more, and know how to pour the pesos in to create masterpieces.

It should be enormous, a bloody and vicious epic and it is aimed to hit the screen in 2011.

What era is it based around?
Title: Re: TV Shows.
Post by: Catalyst on March 08, 2010, 05:37:19 PM
No era in Earth history.  FRom Wikepedia:

"The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily upon a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos.  Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses other races are introduced, such as the cold and menacing Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both races thought to be extinct by the people of the story. There are three principal storylines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros between several competing families; the rising threat of the Others who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the journey of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years previously (War of the Usurper) and now seeks to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, all three storylines become intensely interwoven and dependent on each other."

My own review:
The series of Books is known as "a Song of Fire and Ice" which the opening tale is "a game of Thrones".  It is typical of many of the fantasy/parallel worlds fiction in that it is based in a era of feudalism, knights and castles, dragons and catapults and so on.  There are the usual fictional races and dark magicians and what have you, and lots of wholesale rape, murder, pillage, betrayal and general unpleasantness.  Although Martin has given us a fresh take, none of this makes the series unique in the genre.
What makes this saga break free of the pack and stand proud is the sheer brutality and graphic nature of the violence, the heartless and seemingly random decimation of major characters in the story, the fact that the tale is so unpredictible that after 5 books there still isn't a clear "hero". In fact, at the rate of attrition of the nobility, the soldiers and indeed everyone else on the whole continent, you wonder who will be left alive at all.   Martin writes as would a homicidal maniac, a very intelligent homicidal maniac with a vision that we  can't grasp.   It is a saga of majestic slaughter, of the strong destroying the weak, of shifting alliances and a glimpse into the true horror at the core of the human soul.  You can almost hear the metal playing in the background during the fights.
Awesome shit.

Hope that helps.

As much as I like reading that stuff (I'm halfway through Feist's complete works right now actually), I have never seen any fantasy series translate well to tv. Recent examples include Merlin and Legend Of The Seeker (based on "The Sword of Truth" novels by Terry Goodkind). They always make me cringe with the hokey acting and language, lame special effects, and just downright childishness. So while I will probably check out at least one or two episodes of this new series with the highest hopes, I'm not expecting much.

Reading a Feist novel myself right now, "Into a dark Realm".  How far into the series are you?

I wouldn't worry about the show.  HBO are the masters of avoiding dilution of the essence of a tale.  No doubt the story will be stightly reworked, but I have supreme confidence in the production.  The actors will also be top-notch as always, Sean Bean is just one of the actors who have been confirmed.

I actually quite enjoyed Prince of the Blood. I didnt think it had time to boring, it was pretty short.
You might like The King's Buccaneer, there's a couple of old characters and it mostly takes place on the sea and distant lands, but it's about as long as Magician, so you may also find it boring.

Dark Tower was cool. Epic. It kind of slowed down around Book 4, but it picks up again pretty quickly in the next three. And if you thought it was bizarre now, you haven't seen anything yet.

Fiest gets better as he goes.  His Serpentwar series is epic.
I loved The Dark Tower series, totally had me by the balls until book 5.  And then it became harder to read, twisted and odd.  It gets back on track towards the end.
I will give you a hint though:  A couple of pages before the end of the seventh and final book King suggests you stop reading at that point, claiming the journey to be be much more important than the destination or something like that.  I couldn't resist and read on, but I would suggest that you take his advice and stop there.

Sorry chaps, but allow me to interject.

Babylon 5, the all time best sci fi show of all time. It's so dick smashingly good.

Also I think Jez might appreciate Saxondale.

Anyone watched the first episode of The Pacific (kinda the follow up to Band Of Brothers) yet? I downloaded it last night but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet...

I've never watched B5.  I did watch a couple of seasons of this stupid show called "Andromeda" or something and it put me off the genre a fair bit.

Why would I like Saxondale?  Never even heard of it.

Dan, thanks fopr that, I didn't know it had started airing.  I am gonna watch it today since I have been commanded by a doctor to stay off my feet for a week.  I DL Sherlock Holmes last night, I thought that was a cool movie.

Character summary for main lead. stolen from Wiki

Tommy Saxondale
Middle-aged pest-controller Tommy Saxondale (Steve Coogan) is the survivor of a hostile divorce who now lives with his girlfriend, Magz, proprietor of the anarchic T-shirt shop "Smash the System". Tommy speaks with an East Midlands accent and occasionally refers to his Nottingham heritage, though he and Magz live in Hertfordshire. An ex-roadie, Tommy regards himself as a maverick and a free thinker and takes every opportunity to impart his wisdom to his young assistant, Raymond; most of the time, however, the wisdom he imparts is not quite as sound as he likes to think. In his line of work, as well as Pharaoh ants, mice, and occasionally moths, Tommy has to battle with snowboarders, pigeon-loving activists, and people who talk about property prices. Tommy knows his own mind and isn't afraid to speak it; unfortunately, Tommy also has anger management problems, and when those around him don't give him quite the level of respect he feels he deserves, it tends to lead to explosions of temper that result in a few more visits to the anger management course. Tommy is devoted to his Ford Mustang Mach 1, although he drives the much less macho Renault Kangoo for work, a fact that he refuses to let affect his fierce sense of dignity. As he insists, it's not 'Kangaroo', it's 'Kangoo'. Tommy also resents the fact that people often remind him throughout the series that he never toured with Led Zeppelin.

Thats why ;)

Okay so I watched the first episode of the Pacific last night and I was very impressed. I was a huge fan of BoB so I was kinda wary as to whether the new one would be able to pull it off but they've done a great job! Its not 100% action in the first episode due to setting up the characters but the action I did see was very well done. Seems to have a decent cast too - nowhere near as many well known actors as BoB but they carry it off brilliantly.

Now I just have to wait for the next episode  :wall:

Yeah, I've been hanging out for it, but I think I'll wait until it's finished going to air, then I can watch it at my own leisure and speed.

How can you like Birdman and not Aqua Teen Hunger Force or Sealab 2021?!

Sorry about regenerating an old thread for this, but I have to say that you are spot on there old girl.  I downloaded 7 seasons of ATHF and watched the show from the start.  First season is pretty average but it just gets more and more munted and twisted as you go.  I am totally addicted now.

So good call.

For such a twisted and seemingly random show it really does help to watch it start to finish. The characters definitely do develop in their own little ways.

Goes for any TV show really. If I don't watch it from episode 1, I rarely get into it until I do watch it in order.

Anyone getting into anything new? I've just got 30 Rock which is pretty entertaining but i'm almost finished with those already....

30 Rock just finished season 4, wasn't as good as first 3 but still not bad.

Better off Ted.. though that got cancelled recently before it finished airing the 2nd season.

Always Sunny in Philadelphia is good stuff that we in Australia are only starting to watch in the last year or so but it's been running for ages.

Been a while since I went searching for new shows...

Outrageous Fortune season 6 soon! Best show ever.

IT Crowd season 4 soon also. (Pretty sure this is the first show of Graham Linehan's (Father Ted/Black Books) to go past a 3rd season).

30Rock is funny for sure, and It's always Sunny in Philadelphia is an absolute riot.  This show is twisted right out of shape, there are no good people anywhere, they are ALL completely degenerate assholes.

Has anyone seen the HBO cartoon "The Life and Times of Tim"?  That is one fucked up show.

By the way, if anyone is interested the first episode of TRUE BLOOD is available for DL.
