so i saw this movie yesterday and thought it was fuckin amazing. Perfect blend of filmstyles of documentary, action and even some good ol' gore thrown in there. I really liked how PJ didnt tame down the action/deaths to make it fit a PG-13 audience, cause some parts are fuckin brutal.
easily best sci-fi movie since T2 for me.
opinons?

OMG it out already?? :o
i been waiting for this for ages...have to see it when i get back from japan!!! :cunning:
-
I read a review in the West Australian during the week, it sounds fucking sick.
Gotta see this!!
-
i have been looking forward to this movie and the reviews and people telling me its amazing makes me want to see it even more i didnt even know it was out this week

Just got back from seeing it at Midland Cinemas and it is really a unique movie. The documentry aspect really works well and it's filled with heaps of humor, swearing and gore. Although its gonna have some tough competition from James Cameron's Avatar http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/

Avatar certainly looks good, and the technology is going to be groundbreaking. But what makes district 9 so good is the doco style and the fact they didnt set this in Manhatten or somewhere lame like that. It's alot more believable baing set in the slums of South Africa.
I guess the only unanswered question i had was why was the fluid that propells their ships/technology, responsible for transforming humans into aliens? Seemed like that really didn't get properly explained, even though it was a fuckin cool plot line. i guess because it was based on their DNA or something, must have made humans mutate.
-
Yeah, I guess the fluid was more of a means to an end. But I agree about the setting, it certainly makes for some really good parallels and social commentary for both the Apartheid and present day South Africa. I think that would also make it a non-Hollywood movie and if so, it has probably the best effects for that sort of movie I've seen. It also has one of the highest body counts of recent films that I've seen.
-
lets hope there is a second movie. The ending sets it up nicely given they relocate all the aliens and they are growing in numbers. Seems silly to just end it without a conclusion.

Dose bloody prawns! ;D
I think it may have worked better without the goofy humor part, but it reminded me of Braindead/Bad taste a lot, could see how Jackson was a big influence on the director. Good to see a non american movie for a change in the mainstream.

Saw it today. Really liked it, however I think JC's Avatar is going to be something rather special. Fingers crossed as JC has proven time and time again he knows how to finish off a great film.

Saw it yesterday, loved it. Thought it was brilliant how they set it in South Africa, and mirrored Apartheid with the prawns.
I didn't find the gore to be excessive at all, although the guy who was sitting to my left in the cinema kept going "ewww" whenever anyone exploded, and wouldn't shut up when a head got ripped off.. pansy.

saw it tonight and I think it was pretty damn good. The main actor, considering he has pretty much came from no were did a good job acting in my opinion. The directing and filming was really good. I appreciated the way the film flowed from doco to film ect. The way that it was set in South Africa and they had this huge divide between prawns and humans was fucking really well executed.
If this had been some over hyped pro america hollywood film we would have most likely been watching a movie directed by michael bay staring explosions, bad plot/acting and execution and shia ladouche.
Though much like you I had some dickhead and his mates laughing through the whole movie behind me.

haven't seen it yet, but good to know films are being recorded not far from where I was born...I wonder if they managed to leave with all their equipment... :hmm:
-
Really hanging out for this.. haven't read much of this thread or others as to not spoil it. The original short by Neil Blommkamp (sp?) was really cool.
On the topic of Avatar, I'm going to the preview this Friday where they're showing 16 mins of the film.. can't wait!! :D

I thought it was amazing. Mech-fuckin-warrior!
-
The part where the AI-controlled mech caught all the bullets with some sort of incredibly powerful field, then launched them back!? Holy FUCK! I was pretty turned on at that.

As was I, but when he picked up a pig and threw it at the soldier has got to be one of the most awesome things ever. Catching the RPG in mid air was also pretty cool.
-
nah when that robot thing like instantly exploded like 5 african gang members...I actually shat my pants a little during that scene.
-
Don't even get me started on how hot the gun-porn was in this movie. The 50cal sniper rifle towards the end was fucking badass! DHOOOOM! *chk, chk*

It was something so very special :)
The pig throwing was funny XD

It was pretty refreshing to see a car fly through the air in a movie and NOT FUCKING EXPLODE WHEN IT HIT THE GROUND!!
-
I thought the humour worked really well for this film.
It was almost more of a comedy than sci-fi, but either way, I enjoyed it.
'You sneaky fucking prawn!'

finally saw it, i was really impressed, having grown up in south africa it was interesting to see, and there was a couple of times i was the only one in the cinema laughing at something.
Pretty sure they wouldn't of bothered building that camp, probably just bought it from the squaters that were living there.
