Title: Cheers
Post by: gunsnkuru on December 02, 2009, 09:34:13 PM
Cheers, this is my first post and wanted to introduce myself here. I'm from Northern California and I'm traveling across AU on a rock tour.

I found this site through themetaltravelguide.com.  I'm looking for some good metal/ punk/ rock bars or good places to drink. Any suggestions?  I'm in Perth for the next few days. What are some good places around?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Mate, the metal travel guide http://www.metaltravelguide.com/mtg/index.php is one of the best metal resources EVER. I used it extensively when planning my euro metal assaults the last few years and will continue to do so for my upcoming holidays. Part and parcel of that was adding WF on there as a resource ( http://www.metaltravelguide.com/mtg/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=listcats&cat_id=13&Itemid=56 ) so im fucking stoked that someone actually referred back here from my entry on that website!! ;D

Not much in the way of metal gigs / bars here unfortunately. If you want some generic rock / metal pap you can try rocket room on friday (see my other metaltravelguide entry). Alternatively theres this gig on saturday at the castle hotel which is for far more ecclectic / extreme metal tastes:

http://www.wf.com.au/forum/index.php?topic=5151.0

Cheers & beers! ;D

G'day mate,

Glad to see you made your way here and welcome!

(And cheers to SOD for the link up  :headbang:)

As he mentioned there is that gig at the Castle on Saturday, and also on Friday night at the Rocket Room is the "Metal of Honour" show:
http://www.wf.com.au/index.php?view=details&id=186%3AMetal+Of+Honour&option=com_eventlist&Itemid=59

Hopefully see you out at one of the shows!

Thanks!

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to the shows.  Thanks for the recommendations here in Perth!  I think I'll be trying to make my way down to the Rocket Room this evening.

Any local brews that you guys would recommend as well?

Not much in the way of local beers of any note, but Little Creatures is pretty good, same style as Sierra Nevada.

Stay away from Swan / Emu.

It's not so much the quality of beer here that's the problem as it is the price.

He could buy our worst beer available and it'd be better than American dish water.

Ouch.
Come on now, there is plenty of great American beer and there is a shit ton of nasty ones as well.

So far the good ones here that I've enjoyed are

Little Creatures Pale
Fat Yak Pale
Coopers Pale Ale
James Squire Pale
James Squire Amber

The bad

Swan
Hahn
Beez Neez

The ok

Coopers Sparkling
VB
Tooheys

and yes, I had to spend a weeks wages to have these and the Rocket Room wasn't even open when I got there.

Has anyone been to the Little Creatures Brewery?  I might have to venture there next.

Yeah it's pretty great!
Check out Sail & Anchor and Salt on the Beach brewery's too, both in Fremantle!

James Squire's Golden Ale is my favourite beer in that sort of price range (not that I can ever afford beer in that price range!)

I'm with Gunskuru regarding Beez Kneez. I never understood the fuss about that beer. It's about as tasteless as Budweiser but for some stupid reason has a hint of honey. Why would anyone want to put honey in a shit beer...or a good beer, for that matter?

Just be aware that the Little Creatures brewery is even more expensive than the Rocket Room :(

Just stick to buying premium, imported German/Belgian beers, and you can't go wrong.

Beez Kneez is horrid, horrid shit. I had a friend recommend it to me once. They are no longer my friend.

I love the irony in the name of the James Squires pub that just opened on Murray St. "The Generous Squire's" or something like that. $10 for a pint of domestic beer is not very generous at all.

Creatures hovers around 8 a pint. Straight from the bright tanks, so it's much better than the shit they dish up at pubs around the city.

I'll happily pay it. If it wasn't so far away from me I'd live there

I don't mind honey in beer, but the light wheat stuff stinks. I've home brewed and added honey with some pretty good results.

Never went inside the Rocket Room. The doors were locked.  Ended up sitting on the patio of this Brass Monkey place smoking and heckling the other folks there.

Would have to say that I'm impressed by the beer in WA.  There isn't really anything good that gets exported to the US from Australia.  All I kept hearing about was VB and Coopers.

After looking at a map and the inside of my wallet, I doubt that I'll make it to the Little Creatures Brewery.

I'm sure its expensive as well, but I did hear of a Belgian beer bar around town as well.  Anybody know bout this place?

Yep, The Belgian Beer Cafe on Murray St. It's a trendy hangout for young rich businessmen. If you have the money, it's great cause they serve proper European beers, but it ain't cheap. I think a 330mL glass of just about any beer on the menu will set you back around $9. Having recently been to Europe and bought the same beers in supermarkets there (Leffe, Hoeggarden etc) for roughly $1 per bottle, I don't think I could bring myself to go back to the Belgian Beer Cafe.

It is nice though.

Buy 3 longnecks of Swan and stay at home if you want to save money and have a good time

I bought a 30 can block of Haagen blonde for $30 at Celebrations Marrangaroo the other week! I didn't even know Haagen did cans! They didn't taste very good though. Much different to bottled Haagen.

Haagen in a can? Weird. I remember good old $25 dollar cartons of them. Those were the days

Post by: cyanide_christ on December 04, 2009, 01:02:30 AM
Yep, good stuff. But yeah, the cans aren't great. Tastes more like EB than the bottled Haagen. For $30 though, you really can't complain.

HEH HEH HEH..... i always used to buy Haagen (bottles) until they increased the price to $35. I then reduced my tightness and started buying cartons around the fiddy dorra mark - Boags Premium, Peroni etc. After you drink a nicer drop going back to haagen tastes like drinking wet vomit unfortunately :/

Tis true, but I'll take a $35 carton of Haagen over a $40 carton of Swan Draught any day. You know beer prices are getting out of hand when a carton of super approaches the $40 mark.

That's why I make my own beer!

I just made myself a Bavarian wheat beer with all the extra trimmings (well some of the extra trimmings). Only problem is I have to wait at least a month for it to be ready!

HAHA when you put it like that, absolutely. I cant argue that the price of booze here is outrageous ..... even for SHIIIIIT :/

If you want to save some cash, skip the pub & get down to the international beer shop in west leederville. Best selection of kick ass beer ever.
One of the best beers I have ever had I get from there & it is Australian. Not West Aussie though. The company is Holgate, they make awesome brews.
As for honey being shit in beer, I disagree. Honey mead is fucking unreal. My brother has 4 bee hives in Qld & is brewing some now. Will have it perfected by the time I go visit him hahaha.

Anyone heard of www.boozle.com.au/ you type in your postcode and what you drink and it brings up all the specials in your area. Pretty handy...

I find boozle pretty hit and miss/always forget to check.

What made me laugh (and nearly cry) was going into liquourland yesterday and seeing Cartlon Cold ON SPECIAL for 40 dollars....what the fuck that used to be a last resort 16 yr old omg we only have 29 dollars what the hell carton of beer.  :err:

Had a place near my house that did VB cartons for $31 for years, then they put them up to $38 out of nowhere. Considering burning it down.

I work at liquorland and we charge $44 for a block of export and 50 for a block of VB, probably nothing to do with coles themselves but still i do everything in my power to bring the company down from the inside

The Pale Ale from Billabong brewery is pretty good. About time they started bringing some beer out to the public.

Billabong Brewery has some really good beers, I quite like the ginger beer even though I'm not a fan of ginger beer in general. The pale ales are quite good as well. Billabong make gluten free beers as well, so if you're a celiac and can't eat wheat or anything gluten, Billabong is awesome. A carton is expensive though. I bought my carton of Billabong Pale Ale from Cellarbrations in Kardinya.

Beer out in pubs in general is pretty expensive, I work in a hotel bar and charging $9 for a stubby of other local or import beers and $9 a pint for the draft beers is pretty ridiculous. Beez Neez is actually better on tap than from the stubby, but still not very good. It is overrated and there are much better beers around.

Welcome to Western Australia. As you can probably tell, there's fuck all else to do here, so all we do is drink and talk about drinking, as fairly clearly indicated in this thread.

Bottoms up :D
