Ok I meant to start this up a while ago but have just been really busy, but once again it is time for the voting for the Western Front Awards (WA) for 2009.
This stage is just the nomination period, and then from that will be created a voting form to select from the top nominees.
Just nominate in each category that you have a choice for, in the format:

With 1 being your favourite and your follow up nominations (But you can just choose one or two if that's all you can think of).
The nominations are for the best of Western Australian metal.

I don't give a fuck really. I voted my own band in second best release. I haven't listened to everything that's been released by local metal bands in the last year or so. Some I have heard and others I haven't. I can't judge Cd's I haven't heard. When I submit a vote I can vote for who ever or what ever I like. It's up to me how I make my own decisions.
Simple. :-*
Given the the lack of respect I have for what people outside of my own band may say or feel about the music I create as it's being written I can say it's fair to believe this vote holds little, if no sway at all. There's no need to feel threatened!

Sure, im glad he got voted for in the end. Its nice having a wide variety of drumming styles to be able to recognize out there in the scene, definitely depending though on how much the player utilizes his abilities to match the sounds and atmosphere produced by the other musicians in the band, and is somewhat also good publicity I guess

Well, maybe I got a bit excited... I would have no problem agreeing with you that Void are nothing but excellent! Fizzo is probably the best young drummer in Perth, flat out... I know for a fact he does not dig metal at all though, so I don't think he will be rushing to pick up a trophy at the awards night ;)
I just thought that the Western Front awards were for bands generally based in the "metal" style. But, I'll add The Order of the Black Werewolf to my vote then please, because they are fucking kick arse!!

Andy May not be much of a metal fan but Dane Alderson fucking LOVES Pantera - Vinnie Paul in particular :D
And sure it definately is a real shame Andy's not into any sort of metal (I think it may have something to do with the slightest possibility of him being quite the religious man of sorts...) because hes got a real beautiful fluid organic approach to the drum set and I would love to see more of these 'Jazzier' styles in metal drumming rather than your usual ting-ting, bash-bash insert tom roll here but drown it out with double kicking so it sound UBER MUDDY! :headbang: CLICHE!
Sure I love Jazz but their are definately moments I couldnt live without my Metal! And in the end most times im so glad I had the option to apply a more organic sound on the drum set to said guitar riff than a series of lame double kicks and blast beats, would'nt that technically be 'the easy way out'? :D. This Dave Alderson sounded like a good drummer so rather excitedly, im going to spend the next half day looking him up on the internet!

Yeah, I have a tendency to not approve deletions when nitwits make hasty decisions. It's happened plenty of times before and then they want back in. I just want to say as well i've BEEN THINKING about it and want to of coarse thank all the people that have nominated me, especially since towards the start of this period of nominations I realise I was'nt even drumming but instead completely bitter over certain things that had gone down. But now I would like to say that with all the bitterness behind me I am 100 percent looking forward to making music with my band Khariot and maybe hopefully other future projects, its not a popularity contest its about playing music that you can express yourself in which I feel I can do within this band quite appropriately.

Sorry bout the vagueness of the votes, they are the only people i know that i felt i wanted to vote for, last vote fair enough was to be stupid, but with people like Ruun trolling the place and the rest of the stupidity at times I shouldn't really need to justify myself.

Ok, this reviewing shit has opened my eyes to some hitherto unnoticed talent, so I just gots to be nominananatering. It isn't easy when I like heaps of bands, I want to vote for most of them, so you will excuse me if I choose to offer an explanation for why I nominate each band/member so you understand I am not playing favourites. Sorry if it gets a bit long-winded.
Oh, and for the last five years I have avoiding nominated my band or anyone in it because I honestly didn't think we had earned it, but this year I do. So fuck off. ;D
Best Local Band
1. Mhorgl They played a bazillion shows this year, and although they are not yet a favourite band of mine, they earned a nomination for their hard work. My prediction for the winner this year.
2. Neverbjorn. Not quite as many gigs as Mhohrhghl but some big ones, a big CD launch, and we generally worked our asses off. Besides, we are so pretty. ;D
3. Enforce. They didn't play much this year, but when they did they just twisted my nips. They get better each time I see them.
I would also have loved to vote for Nexus, Gallows, Nails, Advent Sorrow and a half dozen others. Damn you Daz and your 3 band policy.
Best Local Guitarist
1. Saxon from UTI. Suprised? You shouldn't be, the musician category is "BEST musicians" not "BEST FRIEND musicians". Yeah yeah, I don't want to make him get all smug, but he effortlessly shreds all over pretty much everyone in town.
2. Rob from Mhorgl. His sound is ghastly, but he really can play that thing. First band Louis has ever been in that he just may be the SECOND most talently member.
3. Dave from Gallows. A craftsman, technical and exact. Entertaining to watch on stage and dangerous to control off stage. That said, it was a real toss up over him or Geoff from Nexus, this year it is him. First year I haven't given it to the DFatman, that'll teach him for going missing. ;D
Best Local Drummer
1. Dan from DFC, Nexus amd Wardaemonic. No need to explain, you all have seen what he can do.
2. Ben from Malignant Monster. So underrated it makes me cringe. He just tears the drums apart in a fury. I get angry just watching him.
3. Mikey from Khariot. Hahaha yeah, he really is one fucked up unit. But you gotta just tune out the crazy and listen to what he is doing on the drums, and you can hear how unique and tweeked his style is.
I really wish I could have found a way to include Ben Maz, Trev, Louis, mike and a stack more. Fucking difficult this shit.

1.Simon from Grotesque. so much spite, so much energy, and somehow tight as hell. (His playing, not his arse, that's well worn in. ;D ;D)
2.Alex from Noctis. Not really a fan of his smooth style, but you gotta pay credit where it is due, and it is DUE.
3.Josh from Nexus/NBorn. Forget what he does for us, this is about what he does in Nexus. Anyone who can play along accurately with that mental torture is unbelievably underrated.
Best Local Vocalist
1.Singer from Dyscord. Dunno his name, I just hear him on their recordings and think he sounds enormous.
2.Jack from Sins of the Farja. He doesn't have the biggest range, but when he joined Sins they got 200% better overnight. That has to be worth a nomination.
3.Bernard from Red Descending. I respect guitarist/vocallists, dudes like him and Cabba have a hard job to do. "Hard" just gets up there and yells his fucking head off. I DIG that shit. ;D

1.Nexus - Eve of Destruction. The album that almost broke my brain.
2.Neverborn - Decimator. The album that almost broke my spirit. Three fucking years of work.
3.Western Alliance - Opertatatation Metal Storm. The album that needed a spellchecker. ;D I have highly enjoyed that and can't thank Rowland enough for finishing what the rest of us could never do.

I don't really "complain" about it.... but think some bands have gotten too fast... too technical. It's lost the "human" element.
Of course, it's played by extraordinarily talented humans, don't get me wrong, but I presonally don't want to sit down and have a maths lesson thrust into my ears at 280bpm. Boring. Wanky. Annoying.
Give me classic 90's death metal any day over prodigious sweep picking, gravity blasting, pristine-produced tech-deathmetal.
Earlier deathmetal bands wrote good, memorable songs. Many newer bands blow them out of the water with musical proficiency, but it depends what you want to take away from the music at the end of the day.

I agree with Damo (and maybe nihilist)... I agree that some music can be too wanky and techy to the point it actually gets boring and then painful to listen to, but I also believe that most listeners (especially musicians) who complain about technical/complex/fast/whatever music do so, because they'd rather pretend they're too good for the music, as opposed to admitting that the music is way over their level of skill, comprehension or compositional ability.

Speaking of young fools, I was at Belmont Swapmeet on Sunday morning about 7am and I could see a bunch of people looking across the road at something so I went and took a peak. It was two young guys and a chick, all about 18 to 20 and pissed out of their minds and they were trying to smash their way into a real estate company office. They were kicking the doors and windows repeatedly, all in broad daylight mind you. Nobody was doing anything so I went over and told them to fuck off. They were pretty big dudes and they didn't like being told, they got plenty abusive and so I pulled out my phone and held it up like I was recording them doing it and kept on harrassing them until they were in a frenzy. I thought it was gonna get messy, but eventually they decided to fuck off and I went back to the swapmeet. The funny thing is that there is clearly no camera lens in my phone, the drunken idiots had it pointing right at them and they were too munted to tell.

Nah there will definitely be a show. Unfortunately, because of the way of things with venues at the moment and other factors, the earliest I could get a booking for was in November. Hence, I've intentionally been delaying the voting process to spread it out a bit so it wouldn't seem like such an inordinate gap between.

Yeah, I actually heard some of Russ' music a while back, in Tom's car, and I didn't mind it... seemed quite nice. I got no issues with Russ as far as I'm concerned, even with regards to the stuff he sent me on Facebook... water under a bridge.

Keep trying to get some more time to dedicate to sorting things out for it but just busy with work stuff etc.
Doesn't help when I actually get some time and then other things come up to steal it, like trying to deal with these shitty viruses on my pc that keep persisting.
