Just a quick poll to find out what the most common\useful way of finding out about new metal bands\songs is. You can vote for more than one option, and if there's another avenue I've missed, post up here.
Obviously the internet would play a large role these days, compared to 15+ years ago!
Keen to find out your responses!
Cheers.

there isnt a "forced to listen to it by a parent/older relative" option :hmm:

Your parents sound cooler than mine!! :headbang:

Internet Forums are my main avenue for new music. Also Last.fm. Both have provided some brilliance.

iron maiden/slayer/metallica from like 4 years old onwards :headbang:

I always make it a point of mine to discover new music, otherwise I wouldn't be so cool for liking bands that only 10 people in the world know about.
-
Merlok - "new" metal

woah - 10 people - you've lowered your standards - it used to be 5

metal archives is usually pretty decent, either just general browsing, checking out the forums, checking fav bands and seeing where else the members have played

yeah, thats fun.... also youtube rampages unleash some goodies too. Clicking random "related links" can bring up a gold mine of cool shit.
-
I like the 5th option except I want to change it to 90s GRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIND.
New music is too much effort. I already listen to all the greatest bands in the world.
-
When I realised half of my metal friends despise what I listen to, I turned to the people that shared their files on Soulseek - they were most likely to have exactly what I wanted and what I could never find anywhere else.

The new Random Band link on MA could be useful in this regard too. Good thing about it is that you would not have heard of nearly every band the generator spits out :) Of course, there is some seriously weird shit out there, and some of the bands that it comes up with only released one demo back in the early eighties

Merlok - "new" metal
well in that case still my unkle and tour posters of bands i know, see whos supporting, check them out

Yeah good point, I used to do the same on Limewire\Kazaa\etc. You would find sometimes amongst the metal, they would also share their back catalogue of Michael Bolton\Destiny's child\etc :err:
-
DC++ was awesome for metal, probably still is, havnt checked it out for a while, but people share a few hundred gigs of metal, insane amount of variety
-
I just keep my ears open for the latest obscure band that everyone is talking about, download a discography torrent then act like have been in to them since....forever.
That's what people do, right? :P
-
I check out most videos that are posted on Blabbermouth\metal websites etc, and then if I like what I hear, look for some more on youtube, and from there watch some of the releated videos from bands on the same label etc. I find thats normally a good way of discovering some new bands that I would have otherwise never listened too.
Also when Kerrazy torrents was still around I would just pick some random stuff to download and check out. Also Myspace etc and stuff recommened on various web forums.

a youtube session is always good
the occasional gold mine of bands pop up from time to time
-
It's not metal but I discovered The Shaggs on youtube yesterday. What a crazy band!
-
Personally I find Youtube sound quality too poor most of the time for any extended music finding session. If I get a good rec, I either buy the album or grab a high quality download.
-
I spend most of my internet days on the Ultimatemetal.com General Metal Discussion forum. My nick is Episteme on it. I usually get my recommendations from people over there, mostly from the Death metal, Black Metal and Thrash Metal threads. I've been on those forums since about 7 years ago and have discovered alot if not most of the music I listen to today from there. I also jump on the last.fm recommendations when I can be bothered.
Usually I end up downloading an album, if I like it alot i'll end up ordering the CD off the net.

Even though most of the peeps on it are elitist twats, the Recomendation Central section of Metal Archives has yielded good results for me

Usually through friends or online. Last band I discovered was Myrath who hail from Tunisia. Like Dream Theater but with a strong middle eastern sound, great stuff. There is nothing better than finding a new band who are great at what they do.
