Modern hardcore is pretty much all image. As for metal... c'mon... take a good look at the 80s when every band looked the same. Or black metal.

i wouldnt hold onto a band that sounds great, but live they wear fluffy fluorescent outfits that are possibly stolen from elton john's secret closet
that being said though, i think image shouldnt be one of the first things a band is judged on, if it is then i dont know how the rolling stones got big cos mick jagger is one ugly motherfucker XD

We all try not to judge on image but it's natural. We're human beings. We're superficial.
Go look at pics of Slayer from '82/'83 before anyone knew who they were and they decked themselves out in corpse paint and spikes in a misguided attempt to win fans.
Certainly not the be all and end all of music, but image has and always will be important in music.

Ultimately people buy music, so the end product is music not image.
I see image as another medium which can be added (and sometimes detract) the experience of a band\music.
Bands can and do use other mediums too. For example, a band may spread rumors about themselves or act in a particualr way to fans and media. This is too affect how the listener percieves the music.
In the end it's all an artform.

I think it's amazing that the solo starts and he doesn't have his hands on it yet. That move really is magic.
