Title: BDO 2011
Post by: Zarrix on September 13, 2010, 09:35:06 PM
It's nearly that time of year again, when all the rumours are flying about, and we get to find out which handful of metal bands (if any) are playing among all the rubbish.

This year, there are rumours of Tool headlining, which would be very pleasing for sure. However, if they are the only band of worth there (and that is quite likely), then I'll probably go to Melbourne if a sideshow is announced.

That still makes zero metal/worthwhile bands rumoured then.

The bonus of having Tool on the bill though is that anyone who watches them for 5 minutes or more will appreciate the other bands that much more.

"Sure, I'm in the boiler room watching some dodgy DJ, but at least it's not Tool" would be a common comment heard that day.

Who cares about bdo??

Soundwave is THE festival this summer.

For what its worth Soundgarden & Stone temple pilots are tipped to be playing

Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden are rumoured also. But yeah...Soundwave is definitely the winner.

I actually agree with you on this. I saw Tool for about 5min back the BDO 07 (I think it was that year), and they were just plain uninteresting.

I'm the only one that doesn't really care for Soundwave next year. I probably won't care for BDO either unless Tool are on the bill either.  I'm just excited that I may finally get to see them.  Apparently, no one else here is in agreeance   :(

If you like Tool over Slayer, you are the Tool!

Tool are best at what they do, which is in my opinion very good. The same certainly can't be said for Slayer.

I'd rather listen to Tool than some obscure black metal band who sound like they recorded their album in an outhouse on a mobile phone.

Also, Slayer are way past their prime.

Metallica are sellouts who sound a lot more like yasseah rock nowadays than heavy metal.

Soundwave is a good value ticket for sure.  Its 2010 trying to be all things to everyone is difficult these days in the information overloaded internet society, people filter out the stuff they are not interested in search out what they like.

A bill with all metal acts is a way better value ticket if you are targeting that audience. Thats why Ozzfest killed Lollapalooza way back in the mid 90s - it was the beginning of the internet information era they had their market and made it the best possible value ticket for their target audience.

I'd rather see a festival like Wacken that hits the bullseye or Megadeth Gigantour or big four package that has complimentary acts making a good value ticket, not diminishing it, feeling like a lot of my ticket is wasted paying for acts Im not into.

Anyone else agree with this?   Dropkick Murphys with Megadeth?
Title: Re: BDO 2011
Post by: Zarrix on September 16, 2010, 06:53:18 AM
I agree, need more festivals targeting niches rather than all these jack of all trades, master of none festivals popping up all over the place in this country. Problem with that is the fact that most of them will have one or two really good bands worth seeing, but that doesn't sit with me, unless it is a band that I absolutely must see, such as Tool

There are rumours floating about that Rammstein may be one of the major acts. I'm not a Rammstein fan anymore, but I could tolerate them if they were playing before Tool, unlike most of the other bands they will have there.

Spot on! If you're into metal, you wont be jumping at a chance to go to the Big Day Out, as you'll spend a lot of time there waiting for a band to play that you like. However, Big Day Out will continue to be popular to "regular" or rather casual music fans, who don't fit into a niche.

Dropkick Murphys with Megadeth?
I know right, such a ridiculous line-up. I can understand a gig having half and half in a line-up, but when it's so one-sided as No Sleep Til, with Megadeth just thrown in in an attempt to draw in the metal heads... you begin to wonder. I still don't know if I'm going to bother going or not.
Title: Re: BDO 2011
Post by: HeavyMetalMerchant on September 16, 2010, 04:23:46 PM
Its all about giving value especially in an oversaturated touring market, internet information overload age why risk diminishing the value of your ticket and have people sitting on the fence? Jack of all trades master of none. Rather provide such a great not to miss line up of complimentary acts for your market that its a no brainer people are going to want to go because they have had the value demonstrated.

In pre internet 1992 yeah it was cool to expose punters to diverse acts but now with youtube and all the other social media, access to everything on the planet - everyone is already exposed to everything, that work has already been done. People know what they like - hedging your bets 'by a bit of this a bit of that' line up means many will sit on the ticket buying fence because they don't see the value.

Rather lets throw on a couple of metal acts to please the metal heads so we can grab their ticket money - why not lets do a metal festival for the metal heads so every metal head will not want to miss this event and be gauranteed of a stong turnout sales because its such great value for money.
People don't think it will work until Ozzfest & Hellfest came along and destroyed the more pre internet age play it safe 'bit of this bit of that' diverse line up Lollapalooza.

I bought tickets to No Sleep Till Perth on the basis that megadeth would play the entire Rust in Peace album which I think would be kind of cool. However yes there are alot of other shitty bands on the bill, maybe a rash decision, but I feel in December it will be cooler and less packed than Soundwave. Also with all the shitty other bands playing maybe all the punk fags will leave after NOFX, and its 50 less than Soundwave.

I don't know if I can justify going to Soundwave for Iron Maiden and Slayer when I've seen them both at their own seperate shows, so I can pay $160 to stand in a massive crowd/hot and drunk on overpriced booze...

yeah yeah, Megadeth and the rust in peace gig. Its gunna be awesome. But are you guys forgetting GWAR? Who gives a fuck what other bands are playing. GWAR and DETH!!! Thats all you need to justify the $109 price tag.

new old words I've come across this month
Sophistry - plausible yet deliberately false/misleading argument
Inveigle - persuade someone to do something by means of deception or flattery
Pusillanimous - showing lack of courage

but pernicious is my favorite, it's a word you can taste

Oh no James Valentine rips into the #1 music industry pretentious rich kid poser Nick Cave (in his opinion):
http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/stories/s2655026.htm

Poor Nick copped a floggin here.

Nick's fart would get this kind of review?

"During lunch Nick let loose with a wondrous fart which was not just wondrous in its tone and delivery but also an ironic comment on farts, a bluesy type smear on the kind of people who think farts are bad taste, an indication of a new direction for Nick, a rectal trumpet blast that was side splittingly funny while still being somehow redolent of eternal mysteries. Nick's fart filled with air with a whiff of brimstone and a view of heaven, and by the end of lunch it had spawned a legion of imitators, none of whom seem to be able to fart with the kind of credibility only Nick can summon.

Nick seems to me to be a one trick pony. He discovered early on that if you shove Jesus and the bible into your work, it makes it sound deep. Just say the word Jesus, or Elijah or Gethsemane and it sets off a whirlpool of meaning for people and you're work is done. His obscenity is too constant to be anything but adolescent."

I never understand why some people get so involved in not liking an artist they feel the urge to write whole articles on it. I saw a similar thing by someone who hated Guns n Roses a while ago trying to convey personal opinion as some sort of relevant journalism. It's pathetic.

Nick Cave could kick that dude's arse.

When I saw the lineup for this years BDO, I remembered a time at Christmas back in the day, where I was eying off a present for me under the tree for a couple of weeks leading up to Christmas day. Then when it came time to open the present it was socks and undies.
So hence THAT feeling has come over me once again with this announcement.

A BDO that promised so much.. and AGAIN delivered so little.
I wouldve been happy to brave the Turds of Jokeyo, and even Johns Buttplug Trio to see Soundgarden once more but no....

I am just a little dissapointed was really hoping for Manowar on the BDO maybe in the second announcement.

Manowar will make you strong. Sword into the wind Hail & Kill! If you want to compete with Soundwave you need the big boys, they were good enough for Sonisphere and smashed the hammer of heavy metal into the stadium so c'mon BDO you can do it!

All men play on ten, we are warriors of the world, Kill with power! Die Die!

Yeah, it was part of the "show". Someone made to look like a regular metal head (in a hoodie etc) run around on stage acting like he just got up there, waving to the crowd etc and Till just set him on fire...and for a second it was like "oh shit, he didn't just do that" until you realise that it was part of the act...haha

rammers were out of this world...cant bvelieve that Tool shit managed the headline title, fucking slap in the face

Yeah, while I don't mind Tool, they had it round the wrong way. Got the crowd pumped and going with Rammstein (that kick drum felt like getting punched in the chest!) and then had Tool on which...after just seeing Rammstein, was eh. Was like seeing a kick arse movie with a shitty ending.

Totally agree. Also when I was in the front section, whenever Rammstein let of a subsonic boom it was so intense it made my fucking retinas shake & the entire stage & lighting rig looked as though it was wobbling & seperating. Fucking awesome.
