Fuck yeah!

They OWE us a tour already, even if it's just one city! They did mention a tour of Australia back when Paradise Lost was out, although I think that might have been canceled due to Rullo having a kid or something. I figure Dream Theater would have put in the good word for Australian prog fans.

I dunno Dan. I still dont see it as viable for someone like Symphony X to tour here just yet, as much as Id love them too.

Sadly, you're probably right... still, it's not as if they're totally underground here. I imagine most people who went to the Dream Theater concerts at least know of Symphony X.

They could have come with Nevermore too, they've been co-touring with them quite a bit IIRC.

Plenty of underground bands make it to Aus, so it's not the fact they're not well known.

the problem is their heads are so far up their own arses it's impossible to correctly cavity search them at an airport.

but they got to the airport...so that can't be all there is to it

Pretty sure taxi is the standard mode of transport to the airport!

You can make it to Oz without even being in a band. I'm talking about making it worthwhile and profitable for them.
Also, where did you read/see that they had attitudes like you describe?

Why would I care about what's worthwhile and profitable for them? How about doing it on the bare bones of your arse because you want to take your music where you have a loyal fanbase? Who knows, maybe they'll gain 3 more fans and be twice as popular as they are now!

DO IT FOR THE MUSIC, MAAAAAN.

I assume they're pretentious based on the fact they write pretentious music, just to answer that question quickly for you too.

How can music be pretentious? It is what it is.

They've got lyrics. Would you consider the lyrics an important part of their music?

Do you consider music, in it's final form, art? Is all art exempt to being pretentious?

I ask these questions because you seem to have a subjective definition of the word pretentious. I fail to see how music is exempt from pretension.

Also, everything "is what it is". You can disguise something for what it is, but a disguise is a disguise (hurr hurr), it hides what something is, but it doesn't change what it's hiding does it!

Who would have thought a pretty weak joke about Symphony X being horrible would inspire such philosophical debate! Good fun though.

^ What Whammy said... I think it's more pretentious to make assumptions about things without objective evidence, as if to make oneself seem an expert at analyzing musicians, their music or anything for that matter.

Tell me, what criteria make a piece of music pretentious?
I don't think demonstration of technical faculty in music is instantly pretentious... perhaps if it's happening all the time, in the absence of enjoyable songwriting (which is subjective to some extent), but in the case of Symphony X, I'd have to call them one of the few bands that actually do write interesting stuff, despite their ability to rip out >9000 nps solos. Michael Romeo backs off from the spotlight quite often in the music, which is more than I can say for average guitarists in countless average bands. They also have plenty of parts in their material that aren't particularly hard to play. Plenty of musicians have a technical skill ceiling above the material they play, so if they really were pretentious on the account of showing off, wouldn't they be keeping the frets on fire non-stop?

FWIW, I used to frequent the Symphony X forums on UM, and quite a few posters there have met with the members of Symphony X personally, and vouch for their down-to-earth humility and friendliness.

While I do realize this is classic (and to be expected) nihilist trollery, you're right that it is fun to inspire philosophical debate. :p
Though I understand you're safe from criticism in that you don't confess to play any musical instruments, I can't help but notice an almost perfect correlation between musos who complain/attack/whine about any trace of technicality in music, and those who can't play their instruments to a comparable level. Discuss?

My ill-informed and therefore hilarious opinion is based solely on their genre, because I hate it.

Also, wtf is an instrument. One time I taped a microphone to my thigh and slapped it whilst I belched out the chorus to "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi (I changed the lyrics to "it's my knife", incidentally). Does this meet the standards of playing an instrument? 'Cause it sounded better than Symphony X.

It's myyyy kniiiiife. It's now or neveeeeer. YOU AIN'T GONNA LIVE FOREVEEEER. I just wanna stab you with my kniiiife. IT'S. MY. KNIFE.

Hit me up with a copy of the recording man, we'll collab on that shit... I'll throw some neoclassical soloing over it, I bet you'd like it. It will raise the bar on pretension! We'll call it, "Stream Of Pretentiousness".

Symphony X are one of my favourite bands, but I wouldn't hold my breath on them coming to Perth real soon... which is why I'm happy that I've already seen them   ;D

They might come at some point though, which would be great to see them in the home town, so I guess we'll see.

(Not really adding anything to the discussion, just thought I'd gloat  8) but yeah, Matt is just generalising and doesn't have a clue - Symphony X rule!)
