The amount of time I've spent in music shops just hanging out with the guys and playing with new gear with no intention of buying anything, almost in itself is worth the markup they put on their products.
The stores on the other hand, wish they'd marked your products up more

Up until very recently, here is the break down of a certain popular US product:
Original US retail: $64 USD ($61 AUD)
US Wholesale to stores (would be less for the Distributor): $34 USD ($32 AUD) ***
Shipping crate: $400 / 100 items = $4 AUD
Import duties on 100 items: $340 AUD ($3.40 AUD each)
TOTAL cost to distributor: $39.40
Local wholesale price: $122.00 (profit for distributor: $82.60)
Local retail price: $189.00
Local average street price: $160 (profit for store: $38.00)
(most stores then do an installation deal, worth $35, as a freebie)
Stores have to:
unpackage box, store the item, add it to inventory, barcode/price it, display it, provide a store front and warehouse, provide staff to talk shit and know their products, add it to their website, have a cash register, an accounts lady, provide an eftpos machine, and installation service, lights, power, water, advertising, etc etc etc.
It clear to me where the profits are going. Ive chosen to simply not have accounts with the worst offenders.
*** Ive seen one of these particular items wholesale in crate quantities (standard sizing for a distributor) for under $20 USD each...

Minimum print runs, to get printing under $25 each, needs to be 250+
Of course, this gets cheaper if you print smaller calendars, no gloss, no drilled holes (for mounting), no card stock, no binding, and essentually... no 'vibe'. Imagine the cheapest nastiest calendar ever, and thats what it will be (if costs are cut)... and that alone will turn more than half the people off straight away.
That doesnt include paying anyone for costumes, studio hire, advertising, photographers, layout, photoshopping, prototypes or preview copies, editting, etc etc etc. Sure, a lot, maybe all, can be done as favours or freebies...
Add a $3-5 compilation CD, and then 50c for shrink wrapping, postage (from suppliers, to sellers, to punters), etc, and its a fucking expensive calendar, if ANYONE is to make even a $1 per copy. And you MUST have a profit margin built in, to cover the number of calendars that DONT sell.
So, allow for them to be $40 minimum. You'll sell three. But, feel free to prove me wrong. I'll be the first to congratulate you.
I honestly think there are much better ways to promote local music, if thats what this is for (that was the original idea months ago). The only people buying the calendar will be local musicians in the bands, or people who are already fans (and hardcore ones at that). That doesnt raise awareness, nor does it benefit anyone. Put the same effort into more constructive ideas, and you'll gain an audience. Promoting to a closed group doesnt.
If the idea is more about feeling good about being in a calendar, well, go for it then, have fun and good luck...

One that had promo via national magazines, mailouts to 4500 on facebook, 14000 on myspace, and 1500 on my personal mailing list. It had some real decent looking girls too.
Another was put together as a 'Beautiful Guitars' kind of calendar. I got one page, and every month had an awesome custom made guitar featured. The guy ended up giving them away when he only sold 6 copies.
Then I was asked to be involved with another... this time it was a lot more professional with pages sponsored, massive print runs, professional models, recognised photographers, my guitars on every page, massive marketting campaign tying in with a major corporation, zero initial $$$ outlay, and guaranteed payments for my time, and a considerable share of the sales and pre-orders. Still wasnt enough to make it sucessful. Maybe one day...

CustomShop Multiscale Seven String. Built is 2008 - First Multiscale 7 string, and one of only two with a flat top.
Alder body with Pompeii Sapelle Quilted top (black back).
Rock Maple neck with Cocobol fretboard.
Scale lengths approximately 27.5" on 'bass' side, 25.5" 'treble'.
Fanned Scalloping from 12th to 24th.
Jumbo fretwire.
Bone nut
Gotoh Machineheads. Custom Ormsby individual string bridges.
Multiscale "Hot Rock" bridge humbucker, and "Old School+" neck single coil. Treble bleed (adjustable) 500k volume control with 500k tone control (47 orange drop cap) coil splittable via push/pull.
As new this would be $3620 and a long long waiting period. It's used, but try and find a single mark on it. Full warranty transfers to new owner (lifetime warranty!). Free setup annually (you provide strings). Unlimited free truss rod adjustments. Free pickup swap to whatever you like (no routing) that I can build (anything bar actives... they are coming soon).
Comes with an alloy look hard case. Its not full alloy, but looks the part.
$3000, with a further $500 discount to current Ormsby owners, or anyone in a band with one

Seen Steel Panther nine times now (going back to when they were Metal Skool) 
Their festival show is totally different to the club show, but still worth seeing. Festival show is mostly their original material, the club show is mostly covers with more audience interaction (and always a celebrity chucked into the mix, and often some high wire guitar solo acrobatics...).
What sucks, is that those nine times Ive seen them, would have cost less in total than this one ticket to Soundwave...

GENERAL REPAIRS, SETUPS AND MODIFICATIONS will continue to be done as per normal. CUSTOM AND STANDARD PICKUPS will continue to be made as per normal.
Hopefully by around September 2011 we will take another look at how things are going and make a decision then. If you were considering placing an order for an instrument, we can add your name to a database and inform you when we open the order books again.
It's been a hard decision to make, but I would rather cease taking on more orders rather than raise prices to limit sales.
