He WAS buff.

The last time I saw him: he was skin and bone. He didn't speak any sort of sense. He couldn't remember his own lyrics and had to sing them from a lyric book when performing. If you are 6'6", you are going to have a certain 'presence', but he looked worse than some of the homeless guys I saw in NYC. A raging alcoholic and drug abuser:

2007:

2008:

And I had heard that he was getting worse.

It would not surprise me if it were true: you can't put your body through all that he did (including steroids when he was 'at his peak') and not have it give out on you.
I know there was some interviews where he said he was clean of late, but was it a case of too little, too late?

Hey all -

I am a roller derby girl for WA Roller Derby. We are putting together a promotional CD for fundraising and also probably a gig. Are there any Perth bands that would be

a) interested to put a song on the CD

b) interested to play a fundraising gig

PM me if interested. Cheers :)

When I was still working/living in NYC, we had a big shrink-wrapping machine for shrinkwrapping drums.

While one of our colleagues was away on a job in another state - and had left his car in the yard where we kept the empty drums - we shrink wrapped it; and when he got back to the city at 6pm on the friday, he had to spend about an hour cutting his car out of the wrap before he could drive home.

Yeah well said Dave. I have high hopes for this. Holographic Universe album of the year.

Yes, but Holographic Universe was a different band really.

I don't share your optimism I'm afraid Dave.

Christian may have gone from SS, but he'll be back - better than ever.

His own projects, plus collaborating with an Australian prog metal band to be released soon.

 :headbang:

Are you referring to him guest appearing on the new Universum album?? i have no idea how much money that took to pull off! Not to mention getting the two guitarists from Nightrage to do guest solos.  :o

Yeah, I am. He is collaborating I think on six songs. Can't wait to get my hands on a copy.

Yeah, but dual vocalists works for grindcore.

Not for swedish melodic death.

Can we please search Perth for a guy actually called 'Pat Hogen' and sponsor him to host the gig?

Give him a chair at the side of the stage?

That would be hilarious.

And he totally needs one of those "Hi! My name is:" stick on name tags.

Hey all -- so this is FINALLY being shown in Perth - at Luna Cinemas.

Here's the deets:

Anvil! The Story of Anvil  (M) 80 mins
Starts Thursday 10th September at Luna Leederville

Quote
At fourteen, they made a pact to to rock together forever. They meant it

Anvil! The Story of Anvil is the directorial debut of screenwriter Sacha Gervasi (The Terminal) and was produced by Rebecca Yeldham (The Kite Runner and The Motorcycle Diaries). The film follows Steve ?Lips? Kudlow and Robb Reiner and their band, Anvil, which released one of the heaviest albums in metal history, 1982?s Metal on Metal.  The album influenced an entire musical generation of rock bands, including Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, who all went on to sell millions of records.  Anvil, on the other hand, took a different path?straight to obscurity. The film is both entertaining and touching as it follows their last-ditch quest for the fame and fortune that has been so elusive to them. Anvil! The Story of Anvil is a timeless tale of survival and the unadulterated passion it takes to follow your dream, year after year.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil contains appearances by an array of heavy metal icons, including Metallica?s Lars Ulrich, former member of Guns N? Roses? Slash, Anthrax?s Scott Ian, and Slayer?s Tom Araya, among others.

World renowned documentarian Michael Moore has dubbed, Anvil! The Story of Anvil ?The best documentary I?ve seen in years?.

Western Australia / Re: 18th july castle hotel
« on: July 23, 2009, 05:03:13 PM »
We are all educated have well paying jobs have travelled Asia, Europe, have children, new cars, top guitars, kept the same friendships since highschool, great family and most of all have entertained way better women than half the metal scrags that hang about like a bad smell waiting for someone to tell them how to dress and act like a lady.

I personally take umbrage to this statement.

In my time in the Perth metal scene - which granted may not be as long as yours, not my fault by any means, just a result of the fact that I wasn't even born until the 80s - I have met some of the classiest and individual women I could ever hope to meet.

I went to what is known to be one of the 'poshest' schools in Perth (if not the poshest school) and I can tell you that some of those 'metal scrags' (as you call them) are more free-thinking, intelligent and worldly than any of the Cottesloe-whores I went to school with - who cannot do a single thing in their life unless it is cleared with the 'powers that be'.

You harp on about how people should know Noel better before making a judgment on him - take your own fucking advice, and get to know some of these women before you pass judgment on them.

Yes, there is that whole 'beer and destruction' aspect of the metal scene - but I agree with Jez here, I do NOT see where the crowd wrecking the bands gear comes into that ethos. That stuff is expensive, and like you said, Perth metal heads these days have kids, families, houses etc etc etc - in the times of a global financial crisis, who has the money to replace this equipment easily? The mortgage payment/kids school clothes/long weekends as a family are certainly more important, in just about everyone's opinion.

Psychonaut, and Mark DeVattimo is one of the corner stones of the metal scene today - he has helped more bands, been in more bands, and put on more gigs than I am sure he cares to remember, and Noel showed him a great amount of respect. If he had handled this more like a MAN as opposed to a petulant child whose mummy made him apologize, I am sure that people would have accepted his apology and respected him for realizing he did wrong.
Instead he came across as a racist prick who both 'apologized' to Mark and insulted him in the same sentence.

no im not a lunatic i just like to run amuck as for tearing the castle apart a few months ago im glad i did because now the castle has an even better pa system

Yeah, totally justifies your actions... Or not.

What if they hadn't been able to afford a new PA system? And the sound just got worse and worse? Or they just shut down and we lost yet ANOTHER venue? This is not a 'the ends justifies the means' situation - it just shows it is time you acted like an adult and took responsibility for your inability to interact with other people.

As for your 'apology', it means nothing if it lacks sincerity.

International / Kataklysm -- Guitarist Detained by Federal Agents
« on: June 18, 2009, 03:33:04 PM »
Canada's KATAKLYSM recently returned home after two separate very successful shows in St-Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. Unfortunately, upon arriving in America guitarist Jean-Francois Dagenais was pulled from line at customs and detained by federal agents.

Commented vocalist Maurizio Iacono: "Well, this was one odd week especially yesterday. First, we finally flew out to Russia for the first time and we didn't know what to expect. There's always been this grim picture painted of that country to us. Having said that, we thought we'd arrive under dark skies, with rain and depressed looking people everywhere. Instead, we arrived to sunshine and enthusiastic people that looked happy and energetic and we were through customs in matter of minutes. So I said to myself, 'This will be interesting.' We were soon greeted there with open arms by the promoters and we were off. We played St-Petersburg first then Moscow. The shows were fantastic and everything was top notch. Fans knew all the lyrics and went ballistic! We even had Russian special forces soldiers stage diving! It was just a crazy, all-around good time and the shows were packed! I could have stayed there another week but we said our goodbyes and headed back home.

"We arrived in Washington D.C. with a layover to Chicago where I live now (the rest of the band still live in Montreal). So we grabbed our bags and went through immigration with no problems, as expected. As we're waiting in line for the customs exit, some uniformed guy grabs J-F and takes him away with his bags. We assumed it was just a random check.

"So we make our way to our next gate for our plane and realize it's been over an hour and there's still no sign of J-F. This was 4 p.m. I go back to the customs area and the place is deserted. At this point, we started worrying and asking questions but we received no answers. We decide to board our plane at 4:30 p.m. with still no sign of him. Someone from United Airlines tells me finally he won't be joining our flight but still no reason is given. At this point I'm like, 'What the fuck is happening?'

"So we jet out of D.C. and get back to Chicago where the guys were staying over at my house until today to go back to Canada. After fruitless calls to the airport we just decided to wait for some sort of sign of life. That sign came at 11 p.m. in Chicago at O'Hare airport.

"Apparently, Washington customs official grabbed J-F and threw him in a room with only one chair and a table. He was there for five hours until they finally talked to him and they told him that he was wanted internationally and by the U.S. government. I could have imagined his face when they told him this, it must have been priceless. People that know J-F know he couldn't hurt an ant. He's one of the most down-to-earth and sweetest people you could meet. After a few hours of denying everything, Interpol sent in a picture and that picture didn't match his. What happened was that there was another Jean-Francois Dagenais that is listed in the FBI's most wanted list and they thought they'd caught him. I mean, what the fuck!? He was given a tap on the shoulder and apology and rebooked to Chicago! Even though we were really worried, all of us laughed it off at the end. It's just ironic that we expected this to maybe happen in Russia, but in the end it ended up happening right here at home!"

NEXT WEEKEND!

(NB: Both albums each come with a short narrative, printed in the linear notes.
These being Part 0 -"Eve of destruction" & Part 1 -"The Paradise Complex"
They should take you about as long to read, the the album will to listen to ...  :D )

You guys should do a split with Claim the Throne & have characters from both stories cross over  :headbang:

*NERD OVERLOAD*

...so that would be like Star Wars vs Conan the Barbarian
Sounds good!
