Bart Centre also doesn't understand (the Rapture), but that's because he's an atheist. Still, Centre figured if many people believed they would rise to heaven on Saturday, then in his nonbelief, he should help them.
Denying it was a P.T. Barnum enterprise, Centre collected, on average, $122 each from 259 people who expected to leave the earth in the Rapture.
His company, Eternal Earth-Bound Pets, USA, promised to take care of customers' pets if those humans' souls were raptured.
Centre's first request for a refund came Saturday evening, via e-mail, when it was obvious there would be no Rapture.
But his customers had already signed contracts agreeing their deposits were nonrefundable."Only six people have asked for one," Centre said in a telephone interview from his Langdon, NH home.
"But they took it well when I reminded them of the contract."
All is not lost for those pet owners. They are covered for 10 years from the time they signed the contract.
