I've really just wanted to "like" some of the posts in this thread because I don't actually want to say anything except quietly agree with you.  Instead I'm replying with words describing how I'm feeling about it.  It's all about dem feels, right!?

Anyway, when was the last time you saw someone jump on a FB page (WF, bands, promoters, gig posts etc) and had someone new introduce themselves?  You would have to go to a bunch of different pages to find it and by the next day it's disappeared.  At least with the forum layout everyone see's everything posted, has the opportunity to say something before it's buried, all gig/band/venue information is in one spot and other than the forum, everything is under Daz's control.

I'm done feeling.

I would love nothing more than WF to be the only standing Australian metal forum!  At least then maybe international bands and promoters can see that we're alive over here.

Meat grown in a vat seems to be the way of the future. Non sentient, lab grown meat. No need to worry about killing it humanly, as it's not alive to start with. Less environmental impact too.

Exactly - that's the problem with over population and mass consumption.  The solutions always seem to side step the real issue.  I've always said it:  Hitler had the right idea.

Sounds dreadful, meat that doesnt work has no flavour. Perhaps we should all group buy up some land to ensure our proper bovine buddies have somewhere to graze and the metal bbq will never have to see or taste this abomination you speak of!

If I could be fagged I would totally live reasonably self sufficient - I bet a million vegan/vegetarian/organic/hippy/good intention types would too - if it were financially viable and not completely inconvenient.  I can T up the land if people gave me millions of $$!!  :P

I'm not going to even acknowledge the absurdities of these claims, but it's pretty clear they've stemmed from the hormone injected/mutated chooks on some fucked up farms in the world.  I remember when they started packing an extra drumstick in some whole chicken packs at the supermarket - people thought they were growing chickens with 3 legs.....

> > > Together we make KFC start using real chicken again.

Would anyone really care if they weren't using "real" chickens?  Wouldn't it kill two birds (haw haw) with one stone if chickens were bred from a petri dish?  Technically they wouldn't be chickens (just like IVF babies aren't human)  and it wouldn't matter how they were plumped up for consumption.  The fact is,  people would still eat them.   Case in point - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9B7im8aQjo

It all comes back to the issue of supply and demand - a concept that simply doesn't work if the cost of supply is so high it threatens demand.  If organic/ethical foods were as consistent (always look perfect, big and bug free) and as cheap as mass produced, treated and modified foods there wouldn't be a problem.  But is that even possible?

What I find amusing is that seemingly millions upon millions of people are having reality filtered and presented to them by a small number of media groups with billions upon billions of dollars to influence in their own interest. Including forcing stereotypes and consumer culture and values to the enth degree. Consumers are trained. Wake up.

Speaking of which, have you heard about the filter bubble?  I noticed this ages ago when I got the shits with all the advertising on facebook - I changed my marital status to widowed and haven't had a single dating site ad since!  It doesn't help that I sift through a lot of crazy conspiracy sites - if any key word I use in google is attached to a conspiracy of any kind, they're the first sites to pop up.

ah i didnt mean for you to zip it, i was talking about me saying i was gonna zip it after my last post.

I know what you meant, I was asking why you would want to bail out of the discussion :P

Maybe I have no shame, but I'm quite happy to talk shit about something I have zero authority on!

I wouldn't go so far as to say that the fluoride thing is a conspiracy - yes they put it in our water and no we don't have a say in the matter, but I don't necessarily believe that taking it out of the water is the answer and giving people a choice is completely impracticable.

Instead of wasting so much time and energy on a completely bias, ignorant and emotionally manipulative documentary, why not cut the reverse propaganda and scare mongering shit and actually try to come up with a better solution?  Start with the real problems of safer disposal of waste and the western diet that is killing people (and rotting our teeth!)  The government/health department isn't going to budge based on interviews with the very small percentage of people that are negatively affected by it vs nearly 200 years of relatively safe (if only marginally affective) use.

Why zip it?

Why do people shy away from open forums like this when the whole idea is to promote awareness and discussion (despite differing views)?  Too much light reading?  :P

So maybe WF isn't the place to do it either, but still, I would rather have the discussion with normal people here than on a forum dedicated to paranoid nutjobs, narrow minded conspiracy theorists or picketing hippies!

Oh, sorry for derailing your thread :P

But I'm not finished!!  :P

Tooth decay has been prevalent throughout human history and so has the push for oral hygiene - people were dying from tooth decay, so naturally they were figuring out ways of preventing painful shit like toothaches, abscesses, infections etc.  A bazillion years ago when they figured out that shit left in your mouth and between your teeth caused plaque, they started using toothpastes, toothbrushes, dental floss etc.

That is the natural progression of our society - identify a problem and fix it.  It's not perfect and it isn't always successful, but we learn...eventually.  In the grand scheme of things, we really know fuck all about ourselves and our planet and no matter how many degrees in BS we have, we're complete still n00bs.  If you took away a greedy, sloppy government, we would probably be far more advanced than we are now.  That's not to say we wouldn't still have crazy people.....

I found this, and if you can be bothered, it's a good read about how fluoride was originally (and debated ever since) linked to strengthening teeth and preventing decay.  It's kinda creepy that all the excitement over fluoride seemingly coincided with the industrial revolution, but it's hard to make a link....

http://www.fluoride-history.de/fteeth1.htm

I saw the Fire Water documentary - the story about the dude with the sick kid bothered me a bit.  I guess the choice factor comes into play when it comes to vulnerable people.

It's important to note the difference between succralose and aspartame - the former is a safe additive that hasn't (yet) been blamed for making people feel like shit after they down 20 litres of Diet Coke every day.  Aspartame?  My god, we need another thread.

I'm sure your nurse friend will set you straight.

The blood stream is actually what keeps things like your teeth, hair, fingernails, bones etc alive.  Everything that's absorbed by the blood (minerals, nutrients, vitamins) has an affect on those parts of your body, and it works the other way around too.  Tooth decay can actually kill you - bacteria forms in a cavity and spreads to the pulp which is made up of blood vessels - infection spreads to your blood supply and BOOM, you're dead!  More people have died from tooth decay than from drinking fluoridated water.

There is indisputable evidence that fluoride is good for your teeth, so it's fair to say that that is why it's in our water.  Whether it's as affective as intended is disputable, whether it's politically motivated is disputable, whether it's the direct cause of all these nagging health issues that everyone claims (the same issues that a plethora of other things have been cited as the cause) is disputable, whether it's a guise to population/mind control is completely ludicrous!  The only hard evidence of any side affect is cosmetic, not toxic or fatal.

If the debate is the fact that we haven't given consent, we weren't informed or we can't make a choice then cool - I totally understand spreading the word so that everyone can make an informed choice. But to throw in a conceived risk of a health epidemic is a pretty stock standard way for people to prove their own muddled agenda.

hah!

You didn't answer my question :P

The problem with these little movements is that the "solution" is always so simple.  What do you actually suggest the government does?

Maybe they could send out a form asking for your consent to provide you with fluoridated water, then based on those results;

Build a new water treatment plant that provides non fluoridated water to those who opt in - that'll cost you!  Then they'll have to build another one that caters for people who don't want chlorine in their water, and another plant to treat water with naturally high fluoridation..........oooorrrrrrr..........you could just buy a super duper water filter....

Then of course you'd have to take your water everywhere with you, because you wouldn't want to accidentally get any fluoride in ya when you're drinking from your mates' tap - and you'd probably have to start brewing your own beer and making your own wine....not that you could really drink all that much anyway......hmm, can't really eat out anymore either, just in case.  But that's cool, because you'll have to completely change your diet anyway - less carbs, fruits, coffee, tea - and don't forget to carry around celery sticks, calcium supplements, chewing gum (definitely need this since your breath will smell like arseholes) and dental floss so you can clean your teeth after everysinglething you eat.  Oh, you'll have to adapt to a new eating technique too - no more savouring the flavours of your food and drink, because the longer it's in your mouth, the more enamel will get eaten away, so swallow quickly!!

Since your teeth will now be even more sensitive to bacterias, you will definitely have to stop letting girls stick their tongues down your throat and you'll have to be extra careful not to knock your teeth because they will probably shatter.  At the risk of your teeth rotting and falling out of your head, you'll have to put some money aside or up your health insurance to cover the dentist visits - make sure you tell the dentist of your no fluoride campaign though, because they'll have to be extra gentle when they're digging all the calculus off your teeth.

Of course humans can have completely healthy teeth without fluoride!

Remind me - exactly how many people have died from fluoridated water?

You have a choice to drink almond milk instead of tap water and to brush your teeth with concentrated dog semen (at a safe level of 666ppm) instead of fluoridated toothpaste - you have a choice to remove yourself from this completely and live on a self sufficient farm in your bubble, relatively safe from any political/economic driven bullets.  You're still just as likely to get arthritis/cancer/headaches and you're still gonna die at the average age - you can't blame fluoridated water/vaccines/aspartame/nazis.

Do you really think water/taxes will be cheaper if it weren't fluoridated?  What do you suggest we do with the other chemicals used to make water drinkable?

I went to see Dr. Paul Connett, Professor of Chemistry at St. Lawrence University in New York talk about 'Your Toxic Tap Water'

This guy is another one - there is no link between thiomersal and autism, as conceded by the very people trying to prove that one existed.  How did they prove that?  They stopped using it 30+ years ago and autism still rose.  Go figure!

The water passes through our teeth as we swish it around in our mouths, and fluoride is absorbed by saliva which sits in our mouth.  How is the stomach connected to our teeth?  By a complex system known as the blood stream  :P  - that's the logic behind it being good for our teeth.  Just like acidic and sugary liquids rot our teeth.

Despite the fancy figures in everything you hear and read about water fluoridation (the pro's and cons) there is no one indisputable, controlled and accurate study that has proved anything.  There are too many variables - environment, foods/diet, naturally occurring and other sources of fluoride, genes, exposure in the womb, socio-economics, access to dental care, geographic location etc.   You simply cannot compare "trends" in tooth decay between countries/communities regardless of whether their water is fluoridated.

Remember that public drinking water is treated with heaps of other chemicals to make it safe to drink - any of which could also be cumulatively harmful to us for a million other reasons and circumstances.  The big bad government even has to defluoridate water in some areas due to it's naturally occurring high fluoridation - the bastards!

We do a lot worse things to our body that kills our brain cells.  Since everyfuckingthing in the world is bad for you what are you gonna do?  You're gonna sit around and wait for the next study to come out that "proves" something - namely that the government is trying to kill us.  I can understand the plight to raise awareness so everyone can make a choice, but the wave of documentaries, professors, "experts" and Alex Jones' as well as the gullible followers turning everything into an anti government parade is starting to get on my nerves.  What exactly are you fighting for?

I drink a shitload of tap water and brush my teeth with ultra fluoride toothpaste......but I among a million others can still think for themselves....

I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I can't blame fluoride for that - I don't believe it dumbs you down - whether it's good for you is another story,  as is the motives behind how we ended up with it in our water.

Humans sway toward a majority rule when it comes to religion and conspiracy if it's marketed right - parts of us allows every point of view to make sense in one way or another (whether we acknowledge/believe it or not), which is why it's so easy to "believe" in "something or other".

Either that or I am so utterly fucking confused that I can't decide between which nutcase theory makes more sense.

They don't look particularly safe. A good flight officer would never risk the lives of his or her passengers and crew by using such a reckless mode of transport.

If it doesn't have the common sense to supply one of these, I'm not interested.

That's the beauty of the Wasp - you're redundant.
