Good to have you aboard mate! Once I've got a few of the technical issues out of the way I'll be promoting the site again and hopefully have a bit more of a lively metal scene once more.

Well, this clearly isn't working. Feels like an empty room with 3 people talking quietly in the corner amongst themselves. A noble effort in trying to get it back up and running Daz, but without people, its never going to work. So far I think 8-10 people have posted and 2 of them were new.

Haha, well unfortunately I had the tickets for Jim Jeffries before I realised the clash with the Kreator show, and I was taking my brother to it for his birthday. But you know as well as I do that I'm travelling all the way to Indonesia to see Kreator to make up for it.

I have a HEAP too- all vintage stuff (rare metallica, laaz rockit, helloween 80s tour shirts etc).

While i would struggle to part with them, the reality is that they're unwearable and would be better served going to some 17yr old thrash kid in Venezuela to cut up and make a backpatch out of than fester (and eventually turn into dust) under my bed.. it's just a matter of finding the time to get around to advertising them on ebay etc

Is any cunt going to hellfest this year? I'm probably gonna go over for about 2 weeks anyway but if i had a running partner or 2 I'm sure it would be a lot more fun.
I just spent 5 days in Melbourne on my own to see a show and drinking by your own at bars can only entertain for so long, i did meet a lot of nice bar staff though 

From here = SMITTY, WILLANS, COTTRELL, AMA all discussing it....

and/or...

I've also got a HEAP of ol mates in the UK who go every year (its a $150 flight and 2hrs away for them - lucky geezers) so i'll tee you up with them.

Due to overwhelming demand, Blind Guardian has announced a second and final show for Australia to be performed in Melbourne on Monday 3rd October. With only a handful of tickets remaining for their shows in Sydney and Melbourne the band has heard the call of their fans in Australia and re-scheduled their departure to fit in one last show!

METAL MASSACRE will have tickets at an early bird price from Thursday 4th August until 15th August. After this date all ticket prices will be the same. Tickets for this show will not go on sale to the public from any other outlet barring Metal Massacre.

For flights:


As Bailey suggests, use Webjet (or alternatively http://au.skyscanner.com/ or BOTH) to determine the cheapest flight option over, then go direct to the airlines website and book from there.

Stick with Qantas / Jetstar / Virgin. DON'T fly tiger - there's no guarentee you'll get there (even if they get back in the air post this "grounding" business which they are currently embroiled in)!


For accommodation:

Best is to have a good mate over there to stay with (like i will be doing for this show) - accommodation cost = Carton


Failing that:

Use these websites to scope out various accommodation options:

From time to time, hotels do deals and/or have reduced rates if you stay for more than 3 days at a time or so. Find something you think is ok then go here to check other travellers reviews of the joint:

My general rule is that cheapest is not always best - why save $10 a night to stay in an utter shithole when you can pay just a little bit more and stay somewhere ok / decent?!


I wouldn't go for the bog-standard "flight and hotel" package offered by travel agents like flight centre. From what i understand they don't make much $ in the booking of flights etc - the $ for them is in the hotel references / bookings as they will always suggest you stay at a hotel that they are affiliated with (and thus get kickbacks from for doing so). You will want to scope out your accommodation yourself as well as the hotel that they suggest may be MILES from the gig etc so you have to factor in travel costs (taxis etc). The best choice is to stay somewhere both close to the gig AND central or a happy medium...

Bear in mind that the knucklehead promoters of this gig have put it on the SAME WEEKEND AS THE AFL GRAND FINAL, so i wouldn't dally regarding organising accommodation or flights. When i booked (flights) a month ago, ALL the cheap tickets were gone - there were only a handful of medium price (which i used a HEAP of frequent fliers to offset the cost of) and of course plenty of full fare / business seats available. Expect to pay $400 - $800 return!!

As with anything, the flow of reasonable conversation on here ebbs and flows - Right now it is experiencing a lull, soon enough it will be raging again. The funny part is that it might even be THIS thread that kick starts WF back to life!

I think you will find that most of the "veterans" still lurk on here, resurfacing from time to time as they see fit - the site as a whole has too much to offer to "fade away" completely. Its just these days we are older and wiser (except for Jerome who is just older and bitterer) - wise enough to steer clear of wasting our time telling some 18yr old faggoty andy that posting pictures of my little ponies doesn't really achieve much apart from making them look like complete prats.

Facebook won't / can't kill this forum because as others have said, it is far too overloaded with trivial status updates from attention seeking fatty teenagers to be much chop when it comes to finding the info i am after regarding what is happening in the local metal scene. Perhaps the best example of this is the lack of a common "gig guide" on facebook - you only receive info about a gig happening here or there haphazardly and only if the organiser has you on their friends list! On here however, gigs are announced (quite often BEFORE they are on FB), indexed and easy find information on. WF will ALWAYS be my first port of call when sourcing relevant information. Don't get me wrong - Facebook is one of the greatest social media ever (hence its success), if anything because it allows me in one, concise place to keep in touch with some of my best mates distributed all over the world!

Regarding trolls etc, eh.... as others have said, this place has always been a hotbed for them. Over the years you see them come and go - eventually they all blur into the same chicken shit newby kid who thinks that the metal scene is full of big tough guys and being new, their only recourse for getting noticed is to act like a fucking idiot. The one great exception to this rule of course is our good,mountain of a man and occasional real life buddy "Nihilist" - he is WF's perpetual anti-troll-troll! To his credit i think he does better job of policing / dissuading the trolls than most of the moderators do - banning and telling-offs etc are (as expected) ineffectual, but his razor whit seems to chop em down to size every single time! I JUST WISH HE WOULDN'T PICK ON MY GOOD MATE NOSAJ SAN SOMETIMES, but you have to take the good with the bad!

So, before i end up writing an Jerome style manifesto - from the very first moment circa '98 that Clayton mentioned that he and Warmaster were creating "the Western Front Online Metal Magazine" (whilst having a smoke in the carpark of the whitesands at one of those old metalfist gigs) that they were on a winner. You only have to look at the site's longevity thus far (12 - 14yrs??) to confirm that i was right!

Compared to Daz you havent achieved anything. Here is a guy that has literally put life on hold to put this metal scene on the map. Dave and Clay also, although once Daz was left with the reigns he rode that beast till people listened.

As much as i agree with this, all i can say is (especially in YOUR case Jerome) - LET HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN, CAST THE FIRST STONE. As much as some people think they are without fault, others see their actions (e.g. endless diatribe, soapboxing and pure ranting about certain indigenous races being untermensch etc etc blah blah) as off-putting.

As a total outsider to all the people who know each other around here i would also like to mention how much this has alienated people like myself from the scene due to not being "friends" as such and not wanting to add people i really don't know to my facebook page just to keep up with whats happening locally.

HAHA WTF .... dude, quit being so socially awkward. If you are feeling alienated by the lulll in WF, you need to get out more. Next gig you go to, buy yourself a beer and then turn to the first random metal brother standing by your side and buy him one too. Get chatting about Motorhead, talk about the best band you saw at Metal Camp, make a gratuitous comment about some metal chick's great tits and make some god damn IRL metal friends! Not hard mate!
