General discussion / Re: Cain makes the Amenta heaps good.
« on: November 13, 2009, 02:14:41 PM »
Tim and Eric have been telling me for a long time how impressed they were with Malignant Monster and it's great that they are finally working with Cain. Nat and I have been there since the start and watched Crucible of Agony go through many members and evolve into The Amenta and I hope they are starting to get a solid line up to carry them into the future. Cain seems to be a great person for the job.

Thanks mate. Unfortunately I have been there already and they couldn't help. I have been to a few places around Sydney none of which have been able to offer much more than I already know. Thanks for the help anyway.

Ask Ormsby / Vintage Lap Steel - Info Needed
« on: November 12, 2009, 06:43:47 PM »
I have a vintage (circa late 1930's to early 1940's) lap steel guitar that I am trying to find more info on and also to get some sort of appraisel for value as I am interested in selling this to go to funding an O/S trip.

From what I can tell it is a custom made (Sydney) model of the early Gibson's but with Richenbacker finish (moustache plates and horseshoe pickups). The plates are solid brass and the strings and slide ithemselves are all original as is the case. From memory my grandfather who bought this told me it cost him the equivalent of two months pay back in the day.

There is no manufacturer details and only has a sticker of the store it was purchased from (store closed in the 60's and was located on George St in Sydney). I have been told that it was never built for an Amp and was actually played through old radio's once wired up (This can not be confirmed at this stage).

Any info or suggestions on people to speak to would be greatly appreciated.

While awards may not appeal to certain people I can say that it does draw interest from international / local labels and touring companies and that is what we are hoping to achieve. Regardless of if the band is underground or mainstream the goal is achieve financial viability in a tough market place. Bands that aren't in it for the money or as a career still need to make something to keep the band going as their is only so much that can be funnelled into recordings and gigs before the members decide it's just not feasable anymore.

So you'd rather some generic shit like Chaos Divine draw interest form international promoters (remember they are one more melodic death metal band in a long line of melodic death metal bands that no-one will remember in 5 years), rather than say Oroborous. Or Bane of Isildur for that matter?

Ouroboros picked up best unsigned band. I doubt there would be any category to win that would be more beneficial. What better way to get exposure to labels than to show we won best unsigned band.

Anon I too would love to see M4TB return as they were some of the best gigs I have ever been to and I had the pleasure of spending my 21st birthday at M4TB many years ago. The issue is that if you remember correctly even then M4TB copped it for putting certain bands on the bill.

Remember the year that "Brace" was put on the bill? How about Segression, Superheist, Jerk, COG, Daysend, Japunga, Choke or even I Killed the Prom Queen?

Regardless of if it is an awards night or a festival promoters and organisers cop shit regardless. This is what I mean by the politics.

The issue with this is that it is far too expensive and risky to run these style festivals unless you are loaded and can cop a massive loss if it doesn't work. I personally do not know many $$$$$$$$$ metal heads and I am sure Adam and the Alchemist guys would love to do it again but the risk is just far too great.

While awards may not appeal to certain people I can say that it does draw interest from international / local labels and touring companies and that is what we are hoping to achieve. Anon. I read a lot of flapping and no real suggestions of improvement from you, apart from taking every band off the bill because they dont suit your criteria.
Its one thing to be an ambiguous armchair critic, but do you have a better way of promoting and exposing your beloved scene? If not, you are really only hilighting your own lack of knowledge and commitment to music youre supposed to love.

By your standards, shows like this would be full of completely obscure 'true' metal bands that would attract perhaps a dozen hardcore followers - and would subsequently be canned afterwards.

If you can attract a wide cross-section of music lovers, and money is generated to put back into the metal scene and perpetuate this kind of buzz, Im happy to have you stay home annoyed while everyone else opens their ears and enjoys more events.

I love the old stuff too. I love the obscure stuff. I love the 'true' stuff. But if youre the only one whining so much about the event, perhaps you're the one thats out of touch?

moar caek.

Or how about this: if somebody in the UG metal scene is willing to sacrifice their pub metal stardom by laying down their guitar and actually help out where it counts: ie with organising events and helping bands they should do everything in their power to help young bands irrespective of genre get gigs, help them record, lead by example in other words. Appealing to industry support will result in one thing only: bullshit commercial bands like the ones on the bill will get undeserved attention which they would get anyway. The interesting underground bands not on the set list will fall by the wayside. That?s it ? there can be no dialogue between art and commerce, it is absolutely destructive to art because greed and stupidity always wins, especially when getting paid for it.

Another thing ? one problem continually plaguing metal promoters is hostility form publicans. Either we break too many glasses or spill too many beers or don?t gamble enough etc etc etc. Now imagine if somebody sympathetic to the cause was in charge of a bar? It would make things so much easier when organising shows. Or in the very least try to develop rapport with that particular industry ? that sort of industry support we definitely need, not the music industry, who would charge you 1000 bucks to see Britney Spears lip synch. Fuck that, don?t want to be anywhere near that.

You are correct in the aspect that venue's and pubs are reluctant to hold metal gigs however the problem goes much deeper than what you have stated. It is not always the publicans but the actual laws and regulations relating to liability insurance and regulations on venues to keep to noise restrictions as well. As an example when we approached the venue for the AMA before we stated what our event was, the standard liability for an event of this scale was $10 mil however once we explained wat the event was it then jumped to $20 mil. This was not due to the venue but the risk assesors in insurance.

Regardless of genre, the over the top regulations on live performances are forcing venues to close down and this is not just a metal based issue it is a music industry issue and they are the ones prepared to fight it so why not stand with them rather than fight the same fight alone  while turning to them and sticking your finger up at the music industry.

just leave it dude - no point bothering arguing back. Everyone that actually has a brain realises your awards show and what you are trying to do is an excellent thing to happen for the music scene in general.
Yeah I realised this on the last post. Cheers mate.

Something I have constantly stated was that we invited everyone to be involved but it was the politics of the underground that stopped it from being represented but in the end we got SadEx to represent that. As far as the other cross sections I think we covered most bases. Agreed we did not have a black metal contingent however we had asked 3 black metal bands to play and unfortunately due to touring commitments they could not although they have stated they would want to be on next years bill.

Underground politics? Oh please do tell! What happened to Killraser for instance (not that they are underground or anything)?

What black metal bands, the Amenta? They are not Black Metal, they are wannabe industrial crap now. Nazxul? Nazxul don't support the scene, the scene should support them for sticking to their guns for this long. Who else did you ask? Was it D666? I hope those people follow GOTH's example already and break up so that black rehash thrash stops being cool.

Anyway. Not actually arguing with you as it's pointless at the outset. Amen.

Wow way to slam a lot of people in one post. Personally I think that D666 are and always have been a great band and deserve more than what they have achieved. Nazxul are and always have been a great bunch of people. Yes the Amenta have moved away from stereotypical black metal and good on them for doing so. Why would anyone want to "rehash" standard black metal.

As far as Killrazer goes there has already been press releases sent out about what happened so no need to go into details about this again but it was made pretty clear the reasons behind why this happened.

You didn't answer my question mate. So you are from Melbourne yeah?

Ok so you mean that you are based in Melbourne right? Yeah fair enough in that case there were a few VIC bands on the bill however as it was held in Sydney it was actually Death Audio's first time they had played here.

Something I have constantly stated was that we invited everyone to be involved but it was the politics of the underground that stopped it from being represented but in the end we got SadEx to represent that. Yes there are a lot of people in the metal community that do not like a lot of the sub genres as you have mentioned but there are a lot that do and personally I do not feel that the view of excluding these elements is going to help the community in any way. Excluding people or groups because they do not listen to the "correct form of metal" is very self destructive and will never see any improvements in the overall growth of the entire genre.

With 8 bands it is hard to cover every single percieved derivative of metal, I mean that is almost impossible to do unless you run an all day festival over 2 stages. I have no problem with you voicing your opinion at all as that is the way things go when you try to do something new and you have every right to your opinion that is why I am simply explaining our position and accepting yours as it is.

As you all know we had experienced a lot of technical difficulties just before the opening of the show. We are slowly uploading some sections on to youtube for people to see what we had planned. The link below was going to be the opening segment used just before the first band (Bane of Isildur) started into their set.

I am going to leave the rest of it however I do find this part very amusing "It would have been good to see more bands on the bill that were not from around here"

Ok so we had out of 8 bands play Bane of Isildur (NSW) Eyefear (VIC) Death Audio (VIC) Five Star Prison Cell (VIC) Ouroboros (NSW) A Secret Death (QLD) Chaos Divine (WA) Sadistik Exekution (Dubbo Tip) mmm yes too many bands from around here. This just proves that unfortunatly people just rant without checking their facts.

I find it very amusing that the underground talk about scene politics etc and yet of 15 years experience there is not another scene more concerned with politics than the underground.

On behalf of myself and Natalie we would like to thank every person who made their way over from WA to Sydney for this show. Our very very big thanks to both Deryk who really did save the day and also a big thank you to Darren. On a personal level I think the WA crew are some of the best guys I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Nat and I will try and do everything possible to get over to the 2010 WF Awards because we know that Darren and all the WA crew deserve a lot of kudo's for doing what they do.

To the guys of Chaos Divine.... Congratulations and our massive thanks for coming and being a part of it. As stated already on this Forum we feel that you guys do deserve it and your set proved it.

As far as the metalshop comments this is something we have dealt with from the start and will continue to deal with as long as we do it but at the end of the day we don't do it for them it's for everyone else.

Thank you all for the support and for just being great people.

Maybe for 2010 we could have a category for best WA based metal Radio show that had done the most for the Australian Metal Awards for 2009.

So good to see SAD EX going to the effort to play a huge gig like this.....and only playing 4 songs   :hmm:

Hey if you can do better with them be my guest. People have been trying to get the to play for 10 years with no luck so the fact that we have got them back for the 1 show is better than anyone else has been able to do regardless of the set length.

Dont listen to her mate, shes a fucking idiot (HAHA nah shes ok really...inside joke hey loo loo?) :P

Anyways the fact theyre playing at all is AWESOME and the award statuettes look fucking great too! ;D

Cheers mate. Kriss has done an amazing job on them. By the way if anyone reads Zoo magazine this weeks issue has a section on SadEx under the article "Metal Bands gone Mad"

There is less than 7 weeks remaining for you to submit your band for the 2009 Australian Metal Awards. If you haven't done so already make sure you download a copy of the submission form from our website.

We have updated our site and now have a gig guide available for you to post all upcoming shows. This will be the new hub for heavy metal in Australia and listing on our site will ensure that you can promote upcoming shows to a large number of metal fans.

New updates on our website include interviews with Glenn Dyson of Prime Cuts and Soundworks Touring, Simon Lucic of Musically Incorrect Radio / heavy metal columnist MAG and Dave Hayley of Psycroptic. Each of these interviews give advice on how to make it in the Australian / global metal scene.

We have a new Australian Metal Survey on our site. Make sure you take the time to fill this out and help us find out more about the Australian metal community.

Don't forget - not long until submissions close for the Metal Awards - so get yours in ASAP!

Pretty good idea, think categories like "Most popular merch" and "Best band name", kind of take away from the credibility that i would like to see these awards have.

Firstly, thank you to all of you who have gotten behind the Australian Metal Awards.

We believe that there is a huge amount of talent in Australia and we want to give the recognition and support that it deserves. Since starting this movement we have found out about the great work that the Western Front has done and would like to move this to a National scale.

Our judging panel will consist of people from all over Australia and people from all different backgrounds and we have done so in order to prevent any favoritism. We have yet to finalize all judges at this stage but details on those who have been confirmed can be found on our website www.australianmetal.com.au

We have put together 20 categories and each of these have been designed to give the bands the recognition they deserve and will give all bands (not just those on labels) the chance to be involved.

There reason the two categories above were chosen was so that we can get the attention and involvement of the younger metal fans to give each of the bands a greater exposure nationwide.

We do not feel that the letter from Nat in drum media was in anyway incorrect and this is a big reason as to why we have put this event together. We want all metal fans in Australia supporting the local scene and not just the devoted few who do make the effort.

Thanks for the support and encouragement. We hope to see you all participate.

Cheers,
The AAHM Team
