WA Gigs / Re: Opeth Australian Tour (Perth date as well)

I've seen the setlists for the American shows, and it is extremely off putting. Completely rid of their metal roots. Such a shame.

Very disappointing.  Absu and Portal together is mind boggling.

Boggling they decided to post this on a WA website as well, unless they are gauging the level of response, wink wink.

Ulver is extremely boring to me, even their so called 'best' albums.

Ambient music is extremely good, especially when you aren't in the mood for some metal for whatever reason, or you just want to wind down. Dark Ambient shouldn't be forgotten either, Raison d'etre, Atrium Carceri (among others) are extremely good. Oh and Biosphere for a plain old ambient artist.

As for Synth Pop, Royksopp aren't all that bad.

Metalheads on drugs = not-so-closet techno fiends. I have watched many metalheads slip over to the dark side over the years.

This unfortunately :(. The friend that introduced me to metal only listens to remixes and DOOF rubbish. Needless to say, I no longer have contact with him, for that reason perhaps among many others.

Good night and a decent turnout.

I've listened to new Enslaved. Certainly better than Vertebrae, but I think it is a grower. Don't feel AOTY potential at this stage, Winterfylleth still have that one covered I think. Or Anathema.

I have to admit that this festival is starting to look quite sexy for most.

However, she still doesn't win over me  :eyebrows:

And of course, Katatonia, which are far above Megadeth in my opinion  .  Now I wait to be swarmed by the resident Megadeth fanboys.

Can't believe I've missed Imperium Dekadenz. I was raving to you about them the other day.  :headbang:

New Atheist to be out this year. I hope it turns out good.

Need to listen to this I think :)

The black metal sections in this are close enough to perfect. However, I'm not liking the melodies, seem incredibly pointless and poorly executed.  Those sections come off like a poor man's Drudkh or Agalloch.

I agree, need more festivals targeting niches rather than all these jack of all trades, master of none festivals popping up all over the place in this country. Problem with that is the fact that most of them will have one or two really good bands worth seeing, but that doesn't sit with me, unless it is a band that I absolutely must see, such as Tool

There are rumours floating about that Rammstein may be one of the major acts. I'm not a Rammstein fan anymore, but I could tolerate them if they were playing before Tool, unlike most of the other bands they will have there.

General discussion / 2010 albums: What has impressed you so far?
« on: September 15, 2010, 05:19:21 AM »
This year, I probably haven't obtained as many albums as I perhaps could have, but regardless, I've found some excellence.

Winterfylleth- The Mercian Sphere is probably my favourite album so far this year. I think it has a perfect balance for a black metal record, powerful without being crushing, and I think it does what bands such as Primordial, Agalloch etc do so well, and that is provoke very strong imagery in the mind, of another age.

Other metal albums of note:
Drudkh- Handful of Stars- A good return to form from Drudkh after the poor Microcosmos. It is quite different compared to the Drudkh many know so well, so it will certainly divide the fans a little I think.

Dark Fortress- Ylem- I was surprised by this one, their best album in quite some time.

Orphaned Land- The Neverending way of the ORwarrior-  It's always great to find a progressive metal album that isn't wank, even though the title may indicate otherwise.

Looking forward to Enslaved's new album too, though I would hope that it is better than Vertebrae, which was boring. Deathspell Omega have an new album coming out in November too.

Agalloch and Primordial have new albums due in the not too distant future, but I think they will be released in early 2011.

Had to pay an arm and a leg just to get accomodation for this.  Worst possible time for me. Still, all sorted now, even though I couldn't get my usual spot.  I stupidly left my bookings too late, because I thought the long weekend was the weekend after for some reason  :(

Quite the influx of spammers today.

Really, there wouldn't be many people who I would like to rid of more than these arseholes.

Tool are best at what they do, which is in my opinion very good. The same certainly can't be said for Slayer.

I'm the only one that doesn't really care for Soundwave next year. I probably won't care for BDO either unless Tool are on the bill either.  I'm just excited that I may finally get to see them.  Apparently, no one else here is in agreeance   :(

It's nearly that time of year again, when all the rumours are flying about, and we get to find out which handful of metal bands (if any) are playing among all the rubbish.

This year, there are rumours of Tool headlining, which would be very pleasing for sure. However, if they are the only band of worth there (and that is quite likely), then I'll probably go to Melbourne if a sideshow is announced.

I could consider coming to this, but Bastardfest is only 2 days after this, meaning that I would have to book three nights accomodation :S

Was a good night. Death Vomit were good enough, Dying Fetus were awesome, and Napalm Death were good, though not as good as DF.
