i just saw opeth and dream theater in rotterdam, and i can safely say now i do not want to see dream theater again live. boring set, all new shitty songs and half their set is them just going into long elaborate solo spots.

i agree after seeing some dvds and live clips of them that they don't really do a very good job of pulling off their music live. I guess because they cram so many layers onto their cds it doesn't really have the same impact when they try and play it live.

Katatonia - Night is the new day...
...is possible the greatest "heavy" record I've heard in the last 10 years. Most people know my history with them and also my friendship with the guys. Jonas and I have been best buddies for the last 18 years or so.
Everytime Opeth or Katatonia has a new record we arrange a small private listening party. Usually with myself, Anders and Jonas. For years we've managed to record albums around the same time and had both the new Opeth album and the new Katatonia album played back on the same session. It's always great fun, however disciplined.
You can't talk during playback (death penalty), you listen to the album all the way through twice, and then we have the "comments". Everything is washed down with beer or wine...there might be snacks on the table.
Well, 2 days after the new Katatonia album is mastered here we are, holed up in a friends apartment ready to go through the new masterpiece by Katatonia. And it truly is a masterpiece! I have not been this taken back by an album for a long time. I almost had tears in my eyes. It's an absolutely stunning piece of music! Easily their most progressive and emotional record as far as I'm concerned.
The finale is almost too much to bear. Here we have some guest vocals by Enter the hunt kingpin, Krister Linder (Chris Lancelot to some) and it's quite fucking moving to say the least.
I've always been a fan of Katatonia. Ever since I heard their first demo back in 1991 or 1992, and I thought they sounded like Opeth, haha! This record however is their crown jewel so far.
It's an album that is "more" than the music that's on there.
How often do I plug something that's not from 1971? It gives you an indication where I stand on the matter maybe?

i don't know how anyone can say the new Katatonia is disappointing...their early music was bland and lifeless - the new stuff is so much more dynamic and the song writing has matured so much. Not to mention the production is phenomenal.

They were Devoid? I remember that band (vaguely). May have even seen them once way back in the days. Were they musically anything like current day Chaos? And who are the original members? Obviously not the drummer, so it must be at least one of the guitar team hey?
Simon was the initiator of the band Devoid and it also contained Mike on bass and the other guitarist was another Mike who is now drummer of the band Primea. I filled in for Mike once which is when i got introduced, but never really properly played a gig with them under the name 'Devoid'. I believe the singer is now singing for a band called The Wednesday Society.
They don't really bare much resemblance to CD, they were more a combination of tech and thrash...quite unique really. But yeah - different band, different sound.

also that new track sounds fucking huge and heavy. The death vocals are brutal. Still not a huge fan of the clean vox but im glad they havent made them over the top power-metal style. I could certainly get used to them. All the good per nelson solo shredding is there which is the main thing!

im pretty sure mostly all of the submitted entries would be from 2008 given the submissions started in late 08 and the cut-off date was early 09. Next years is likely to then contain mostly 2009 releases.

A new trailer was released on the net yesterday for the new hyped JC movie 'Avatar'. It co-incides with 'Avatar Day' which is happening around the world today (Friday Aug 21) where a small 15 minute clip of the movie will be shown in some select IMAX theaters.
Reaction to the trailer have been very mixed. To me, it just looks like the makings of a sci-fi version of a pixar movie - far too much easy to spot CGI.
I hope it delivers.

hey we are just giving valid opinions, thats what Darren wanted didnt he??
in theory a great idea, but at a public club type venue would run into some pretty significant hiccups...but correct me if any of this is wrong...
without any bar staff and having a BYO licence to have people stand around and drink their own alchohol, you would need to employee some pretty heavy security/bouncers. Which is a pretty huge percentage of the cost of running a club. There is no way they would grant you the licence without you supplying, and paying for proper security control.
Then there is the whole question of how do you control drinks coming in that aren't spiked or dodgy? do they have to be sealed to bring them in? if so who is doing the checking on that?
And even if you are charging $20 entry, that really isn't going to generate enough revenue each weekend to keep the place up and running if there is no money going through a bar. If you estimate about 150 people entering @ $20 p/p on any given weekend night, thats 3 grand - and you would have to use that to pay security, door staff, bills, bands, and whatever else....it wouldn't go very far.
If the security can be afforded and it is profitable to do the BYO thing, then i don't see why it wouldn't work, but it certainly would be a tough ask to get the licence for it.
But i agree with others, id rather pay $20 to get into a place (than $10) if i could also bring a cheap bottle of bourbon with me. if the BYO thing don't work then im still all for a metal nightclub! its what we need!!

lets hope there is a second movie. The ending sets it up nicely given they relocate all the aliens and they are growing in numbers. Seems silly to just end it without a conclusion.

Avatar certainly looks good, and the technology is going to be groundbreaking. But what makes district 9 so good is the doco style and the fact they didnt set this in Manhatten or somewhere lame like that. It's alot more believable baing set in the slums of South Africa.
I guess the only unanswered question i had was why was the fluid that propells their ships/technology, responsible for transforming humans into aliens? Seemed like that really didn't get properly explained, even though it was a fuckin cool plot line. i guess because it was based on their DNA or something, must have made humans mutate.
