Computer Software - What's Best for recording tunage?
« on: July 15, 2007, 08:50:15 PM »
I've heard of Cakewalk and Adobe Audition - but what's really the allround winner for producing/engineering/editing various music tracks into a wav/mp3/etc format(s)? Any suggestions would be welcomed, as I'm hoping to start doing some recordings with the basic instrument setup we've got in the house. Want to have a professional ability to make amateur sound ;) hahaha Cheers for the help sound advice fans!!
Regards

Hey man, I think Pro tools is a good software for precise editing and simplicity, but i personally use cubase sx for its plugins and compatibility with my device.

I have pro tools, cubase & soundforge. They are all good & terrible in there own right.
I tend to use pro tools for most things, but it does become a hassle when you have to keep bouncing tracks down or having things on seperate pages because it can only play a maximum of 30 tracks @ one time. However protools is real easy to use.
Cubase has the advantage of being able to run as many tracks as your pc can handle but I find it less user friendly.
Of course if money is NO ISSUE then Pro Tools HD is where it's at  :headbang: , if you have a spare $30000

Hopefully getting the new Linux recording program soon just to have the best of all worlds.  ;D

Well if you want all around simplicity Pro Tools would have to be the most simple program out there. It does have heaps of problems like every program but its the easiest to use and best value for money. Also its the industry standard so if you ever need to send work to someone else you can grantee that 80/90% of the time they will have pro tools. Also with rewire you can connect to lots of other digidesign approved programs no worries. Also the rumor that pro tools isn't compatible between Mac and Pc and other versions of pro tools.. its complete bullshit.

yeah digi-design products are good!

I use a version of Sony Acid Pro at home... that i may or may not have gotten for free... from a world communicational device of mass storage. Though that's horrible...

I find cubase is good and you could actually run a home studio of that shizen. Though i extremely dislike Pro Tools though me being a keyboard player i like things more midi friendly...

On the talk of macs... I think logic is the most user friendly software available... though only compatible with macs (I think...)  :)

No Logic is PC compatible. Our drummer has it & that is what we recorded Defile with back in the day.

Hey ive got a version of soundforge and i want to know if you can layer thing with it as ive only recorded one instrument on it so far (guitar) and also used multiple mics through a mixer into my laptop via ediol usb interface. I want to be able to record a guitar track and then layer another over the top ..is this possible through soundforge?

Eventually i want to be able to do guitars, drums, bass ect all seperatly then mix them into 1 track...

Should i just get Protools?

I'm pretty sure you can multi-track with Soundforge, but I haven't used it for over a year or so (just before Sony took over it, whenever that was), and I didn't use it for instrument recording.

I believe Protools only runs on proprietary interfaces and hardware, or something to that effect. Give Cubase SX a try... I'm no pro with it, nor have I done too much with it at all, but it seems fairly good, and you can also get tutorials for it easily. My DVD edition came with video tutorials.
I must slumber, per se.

Logic hasn't been PC compatible since version 5 after eMagic was bought out by Apple, so it's been Mac only ever since, a little outdated but still kick ass.

Apparantly the latest version of pro tools le wth the 003 desktop is supposed to be more midi friendly. :hmm:
@ the moment I do all my midi on an older version of logic then bring the waves into pro tools.

I was looking at purchasing Cubase 4 until I realised they've removed DX plugin support so you can only use VST plugins now, rubbish! I hate hate hate macs but I'm contemplating getting one and using Digital Performer since I've got MOTU hardware.

Sam....... GET IT.
Macs are great, and the argument between mac and pc users is gonna go on forever, for sure - but i got one for the same reason ur contemplating and shit, all my software and hardware (hardware which i used on a PC first) worked so many more times better, is more worth it in the long run and doesnt crash and kill my sessions...

AND (shhhhhhh) ive got a DP5 for Mac already on Disc =D

how many digital tracks were u taking?

i needed a computer that could handle (via firewire) 8 inputs, basically a Digi002, and its also capable of ADAT in, which adds another 8 tracks...
and so far only the Macs can do that...

i guess if your computer was well schmicked out it would handle it - but probably costing a shitload, and still susceptible to lots of viruses and unstable PC programs, but the Mac working as schmick as it does from day one til present, probably cost a little less than a REAL good PC and if something DOES crash, it doesnt crash the entire platform, just the application.

thats why its a tough argument but hey - im only talking in means of pro recording applications, i go hard with the 8 tracks at times and i want it to be able to handle anything instead of wasting cash on upgrading shit...

thats why this argument is worldwide and ongoing. well, i rather consistency and good design over the "compatability". most things are made for macs xept for the occasional few things.

Most things? You mean, like, one of the 10-20 programs actually designed for a Mac? :P

I think Maddox had a good page about Macs. :P

haha yeah i personally dont care whether its pc or mac. both are good in many ways and both shit house in others. Im using pc at the moment because its cheaper to build a powerful pc then to buy a powerful mac
