And it just wouldn't be the Aussie metal scene if we didn't argue over trivialities until absolutely everything is finalised... and then bitch about it some more!

I'm interested to learn how this will all work. Similar to the WF awards, where the top 10 nominated bands in each category get judged, or something different?

I do manage a band actually, but I think it would be tricky to find someone playing a significant and relevant role in the Australian metal scene that didn't have some connection to at least one band or more. I'm sure the judges they choose or have chosen will do their best to be impartial, and I think it will work out fine.

And yeah I do like bands of all styles and I support ANY Australian metal bands, hence why I got involved with doing Western Front and have been for years.
As far as the christian issue goes, hopefully religious or any other affliations won't come into it - good music is good music. To be perfectly honest I don't really pay much attention to lyrical content these days. I got into metal for the reason of what it has that most other contemporary music styles don't have as much of, which is the musicianship.
I was raised catholic but I'll just as happily listen to any metal that has anti-christ undertones if it's good music. As far as I'm concerned it's entertainment and I don't take it seriously. It's like I love watching horror movies with plenty of gore and violence, but I have no aspirations to become a murderer (yet

).

I like metal of all kinds, from thrash to black metal, death to grind, traditional to mellow (of course with some being more of a favourite than others). The idea I definitely don't like is including 'heavy rock' or any other watered down stuff. It might be ok in it's own right but doesn't belong in a METAL awards (the name should be a tip off). Don't want to make this a total farce like the WAMI awards lumping in metal and hard rock together so mainstream stuff like Karnivool win every year just cos it's pop music that appeals to a wider, lower denominator audience.

Getting exposure to a wider audience is pointless if it isn't your audience, and there is something that I think is more important, which is called integrity.

That's my 2 cents.

I agree with Daz, variety is the key for awards like this else it will turn into something laughable like most music awards are these days. I think if you give all the awards fairly general catagories of variety it will work. For instance:

Best Mainstream Act (so the stuff that appeals to a more commercialised audience such as melo death bands, nu metal, hardcore, metalcore)
Best Extreme Act (your brutal/tech death, black, thrash stuff)
Most Experimental Act (avantgarde bands that you can't really catagorise into the above catagories, viking/folk for example)
Most Improved Act
Best Album
etc

Well guys, due to popular demand (ok that might be a stretch but it is due to you guys and the response for the concept so far - yep, they are reading) and for Dyson passing on my contact details, I have been asked to be a judge for the Australian Metal Awards and I have accepted.

I am sure these awards will be a positive step ahead for the Australian metal music scene and I am glad to be able to do my part to help it out. Hopefully it will mean more exposure for all bands to other areas and to help get out the message of the high caliber of metal music being produced in Australia.

i just thought if they were in the 'process' of selecting judges, that some friendly opinions may be taken on board from the public. but if its already all been decided then good on 'em.

at the end of the day, my point was that a wide variety of styles of metal may be a criteria for having a good cross section of representation within judges.

weather only heavy,brutal bands get selected/represented is of absolutely no concern to me, but im sure there is a lot of people and bands out there who would love to be a part of the awards, and im sure the more entrants they can get the better.

anyway, killer idea with the awards show and im sure it'll bring great exposure to aussie metal
