Buying a guitar, what do you want??
« on: May 28, 2006, 09:18:57 PM »
Ok fellas, im currently desinging a new model of guitar, which will be built with the premise that they are sold at guitar stores, and direct from the manufacturer (me). I dont normally sell via a guitar store, as everything i make is custom made, one off pieces, so i deal directly with the clients.

I'd like some feedback please.

IDEA: Its a carved top, double cutaway style guitar, based on a mix of Gibson Les Paul Jr, PRS, Quicksilver, Driskill, etc. Fancy woods are the norm, but solid and metallic finishes will also be made.

FIRSTLY
, please select a neck joint from the poll here....

NEXT, you need to consider this as a PRS/Gibson type instrument, so the $2600-3500 mark is where they are going to be priced at. PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND.

Now.....
see below \\\\///// for the options i would like your opinion on.

Now, simply "quote" this post, and add your answer (or change it to bold) If something will add to the cost, ive indicated that.

Pickups: 2x humbucker with coil split, 2x humbucker + signle coil, three singles, 1x hum and 2 singles. (more $$)

for trem models: floyd rose, wilkinson vs100

tuners: locking, or no locking (more $$)

Inlays: std dots, or sharks (more $$) (sharks are NOT sharkfins..)
(see : http://www.monaro.com.au/guitars/diary/Custom%20Guitars/Workshop%20sample%20guitar/121-2140_IMG.jpg)

Ugh any other options?, Sharks look tacky and dots are boring unless your going for the whole ocean theme
Frets: jumbo, or medium

Frets: std nickel silver or stainless steel (more $$)

Not sure the difference between the locking and no locking tuners but if i was to buy a custom i would say dam the expense and for the best possible after all it is your dream guitar.

It sounds like you've made up your mind on the type of guitar you want to produce, but the super strats that you've done have been my favourites of your guitars.

Yeah, this is the "DC" model, which ive been TRYING to get finalised for 2 years now.

As much as i like doing customs, i would like to have one or two models which can be sold via stores, are easily produced (compared to full customs), and have a bunch of options to suit anyone.

lol, yes i learned how to do my own servicing, it doesn't mean my servicing is any better than yours by a long shot. Since when did building your own guitar and doing repairs come under. "Basic guitar setup", or as you put it basically a re-string

Disbelieve what you read posted on some websites about the tone difference. Ive never had a customer that wasnt happy with s/steel frets as a refret, or new guitar. They are less maintenace, and easier to play on, PLUS they last three times longer.... which is the real reason most repairers dont want you to have them (plus they are extremely hard to get).

basswood body for cheaper, and korina body for expensive models .. please :D

I wont be using basswood. I have lots of Korina on its way, along with koa, blackwood, flame/spalt/quilt maple, walnut, cocobolo, etc etc etc etc

if you could make them similar to quicksilvers.. you'd sell fuckin shitloads

Ive been piss farting around talking about making these guitars for two years now.... i got a couple neck blanks made up, inlaid a few fretboards, even cut the body templates, but other things (damn customers :P) kept getting in the way. Ive made a few changes to allow me to get back into this project, so its all go now. Id seen the QSers on EDs site, but didnt realise how much they were like my ideas and thoughts until Cameltoe brough his guitar in. I guess it kinda of inspired me to get the ball rolling again. OR maybe it was cause he said he would have ordered a guitar if i didnt have a 18 month wait list :P Either way, there are a few stores that are busting to get some of my guitars, so its time to go retail :)

when you plaining for them to come out ?

I have to work these through the system without it effecting my current workload. Hence the need for an employee. Im hoping to have five by xmas. and maybe five a month or two later. But, ive got about 10 guitars to finish by xmas.... and six to finish within eight weeks :(

Simple.  :D

most of my guitars are neck throughs or set necks.

This design is more traditional, think PRS, Gibson, etc. So its either set neck, or bolt on.

I think doing both would be a good idea. Bolt-ons are great for players that do choppy, fast picking riffs. Bolt-ons have a more defined, sharper sound which is why dudes like Dino from Fear Factory uses them, because you can have super fast picking riffs with tonnes of distortion without it mushing together in one inaudible mess.

At the moment, but i might change that to include string through tunomatic. Not in the next month though.

Yeah I want another explorer to add to my collection but with a floyd rose would be sacrilege ;)

Well guys, come see me then. Ive not yet had anyone make any serious enquiries about tunomatic equipped Standard Series guitars, so ive been reluctant to develop the templates. Im happy to tool up, if someone is will to buy one. Price would be cheaper than the Floyd versions, by $100

So payment on these is structured the same as your full customs or do you need a full payment up front?

50% deposit, final 50% payment on pickup (8-12 weeks later) for the Standard Series.

5 x 1/5 payments for the CustomShop guitars, throughout the 12+ month build
