Dimebuckers...any chop?
« on: June 04, 2009, 02:03:46 AM »
Thinking about replacing my rockfield fat ass pickup with a dimebucker, anyone got any testimonials theyd like to share?

I put a dimebucker in my dean vendetta about 2 years ago, ive never had any problems tone wise with it. However ive played a dean razorback at kosmic (i believe it was the 'FBD' model) and thought it sounded shit. Sounded realy 'scratchy' and thin. But my one sounds good, i guess it all depends on what your looking for in a pick up? A bill lawrance is cheaper, same p/u pretty much just not as hot.

the bill lawrence is a totally different pickup. They are not in any way similar, other than they both look the same. The Lawrence is 11k DC, and the Dime is 16k DC. They use the same magnet wire, so effectively the Duncan has 40% more output. Dime got his tone by processing a lower output signal.

No, its actually a "medium output" by WF member/metal head standards, but thats because most people simply assume a higher DC resistance means more output and therefore more "metal". I let the tone speak for itself though :)

The highest is the Master Blaster at 15.8k
Hot Rock is 12.8k
Hybrid + 12.2k
Hybrid Std 11.0k

How would you compare the Master Blast using say...EMG 81's as a benchmark?

The thing to keep in mind is you want the pickup to provide more than just gain to your amp; you want it to have tone and character and then let your amp do the work. A 'hot' pickup is really only good if you use a non-master volume amp and need to make the front end go nuts. Seeing as hardly any 'metal' guys use non-master volume Plexi's or the like, you're much better going for something that's not as hot and provides a cleaner, more balanced signal to your amp, that will allow you to utilise your amp's tonal palette alot more.

Say what? Totally different. Nothing like each other. Actives sound sterile. I can say that, apparently Im the highest selling authorised dealer of EMG's in Australia. I hate them. :) Great for down tuned and baritone guitars. But I hate them for anything else.

Leon has nailed it. Guys who have tried the Nunchucker, are giving me fantastic feedback. However, it isnt what would be classed as a high output pickup. You dont need a high output pickup these days with modern amplifiers. You gotta remember, the entire aftermarket pickup industry started because people couldnt get gain from their amps. So they blasted the front end with a Super Distortion, etc. But, these days you can just turn a gain knob on your amp. Why blast it with something that is too hot, effectively loosing guitar tone, but adding a hot sterile signal?

Go plug into a Plexi/Metal face Marshall. Go try a JCM 800. Then plug into a Mesa Dual Rec/5150/ENGL/DSL/Whatever. You can see the JCM, Plexi, etc need a bit of a helping hand somethimes. The Mesa/5150/DSL doesnt.

There are sooo many people, even on this forum, that I see talking about buying these monster high gain amps, then using only the clean channel, and a high output pickup, through a distortion box of some sort. I think thats the wrong way to go.
Guitar. Pickup. Amp. Forget the rest of the crap, go back to basics. Let the guitar provide the initial tone. Let the pickup SHAPE it. Let the amplifier gain it up. Less can be sooooo much more.

another thing to add; what specific sort of tone are you after? what rig are you running it through?

running it through an engl powerball with marshall 1960 cab, wanting a really chunky death metal tone which my other guitarists gets with his dimebucker equipped beast. Ive got one lying around so im just guna switch it anyways, whats the worst that could happen?

another huge factor in tone is the speakers in the cab; are you guys both running the same sort of rig? personally i find there's a huge difference between the stock marshall g12-t 75 watt speakers and something like vintage 30's, which are great for super gainy tones, or greenbacks which i prefer for more of a 'classic rock' sort of vibe.
let us know how the dimebucker experiment goes anyway, tone is a personal thing and you may just love it!

For a High output pickup a Seymour Duncan JB is much better than a Dimebucker or EMG, however the Ormsby Hot Rock pickup is similar to the JB with a little less gain (more defined and natural guitar tone) but with a greater dynamic eq response and more usable coil-split sound due to the missmatched coil windings. The Ormsby Hot Rock is my favourite Bridge pickup EVER! (I've personally tried around 50 different pickups).

For the tone you are chasing with the amp you are using I would recommend the Ormsby Hot Rock pickup.  :headbang:

Sure, just give us some notice so I can borrow back guitars which have the pickups fitted to them. Most clients are cool to do that, but need a day or two to organise.

Tried my other guitarists dimebucker equipped axe on the engl today, sounds pretty much what im after so im just gonna switch in my dimebucker from my shit guitar, so no need to recall all them guitars Perry.

I do however need to bring another of my guitars in for a service/repair/setup.
When is a good time to bring her down?
