James Cameron's Avatar - new trailer
« on: August 21, 2009, 05:55:00 PM »
A new trailer was released on the net yesterday for the new hyped JC movie 'Avatar'. It co-incides with 'Avatar Day' which is happening around the world today (Friday Aug 21) where a small 15 minute clip of the movie will be shown in some select IMAX theaters.

Reaction to the trailer have been very mixed. To me, it just looks like the makings of a sci-fi version of a pixar movie - far too much easy to spot CGI.

I hope it delivers.

The trailer never represents the final quality of the film but im not sure what to think its a very different plot.

for those who don't know the story its a war between humas and another planets indigeneous population

You can tell its CGI, but it's the kind that I've never seen before. I mean this is James Cameron, who's worst movie is the highest grossing of all time, so I trust this to be good. *DISTRICT 9 SPOILER* Also from the teaser, it seems that Sam Worthingtons character becomes one of the aliens, kind of similar to District 9.

Whoa nice spoiler there harlequin.

I'm just gonna maintain my media-blackout on this, worked pretty well for District 9!

My bad, all fixed I hope. I also stayed away from District 9 and I'm doing the exact same thing here apart from maybe a trailer. I followed The Dark Knight pretty closely ever since the first official picture of The Joker and I reckon I would of loved it even more if I didn't go in expecting to see certain scenes or quotes.

Thanks man. I've seen the movie myself, but it's just not one of the things covered in the trailer. I feel the exact same way about The Dark Knight too, was a little disappointed in the end actually.

The trailer looks phenomenal, IMO. I cant wait.

JC is one of my favourite directors, and certainly knows how to put a movie together, especially withing the scifi-action genre.

The early preview will still be massively worked with CGI, and if you notice, a lot of the sound editing hasnt been completed yet.
It does look as though its going to be more for the science nerds than the action rambo's though.

I saw the 15 minute preview last night, and agree that it looks pretty Disney.. I hated the look of the Na'avi.

As soon as the footage changed to parts of the movie on Pandora though, they were much more believable and less gay. The environments are insanely detailed.. and the 2D trailer doesn't do it justice :).

I'm not overly excited about the story of the movie, but holy shit was the 3D and CG side of things amazing!!! A few bits from the trailer such as when he is "jacked in" to the alien body, is very cool. Awesome clever use of the 3D for trippy-drugged out effect.

So yeah, while it looks a little on the gay side, The 3D aspect is going to be great.

Yeah. Highly doubt the technology needed for 3D cinemas (where one image is sent to one eye, and another image to the other eye) has become viable for Australian cinemas

Actually, it has.

James Cameron pioneered the new kind of 3D you see with Avatar, and cinemas around the world have been updated to digital, outfitted with 3D capability and tested with this new type of technology for the release of Avatar.

Yeah they have these weird arse glasses you have to wear. It's like polarised sunnies - the weird colours effect.. when you're not looking at the screen that is.
Looking at the screen without the glasses it just looks slightly blurry  :hmm:

I read somewhere that a small percentage of cinemas have been fitted out with the new IMAX technology. By the looks of Hoyts Cannington, they have a dedicated cinema for it. Big IMAX sign outside the door.

Chances are, the infrastructure is already in place. If youve been to a digital cinema recently that has released Spy Kids 3D, the 3D Hanna Montana conert, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, etc - it should all be set to go.

(Of course, you probably didnt waste your time WATCHING any of those films)

I saw a bit on the news about it, and he said it wasn't the "trying too hard, things jumping out of the screen effect"... just has layers etc

when I saw beowulf I tried to catch the gold coin rolling down the table
...and on the other a soldier with a bullet wound in his lower belly and his sphincter shot away so that his faeces are leaking out. The smell of excrement mingles with that of the scorching flesh of the corpses being burned in the distance.

I couldnt tell you, sadly.
My eyesight is such that I cannot make use of the 3D effect, and instead just get nauseous from watching it for more than 5 mins.
