Good cab to pair with a 6505...
« on: January 03, 2010, 06:10:49 AM »
Hey guys,

Sorry if this has been asked before...

I'm after a little advice regarding what cab to pair with my 6505...  Ideally I want a cab with V30's in it, but I just don't have $2K + to throw at a Mesa/Engl/Framus/etc...

My question is, what speakers will go best with it?  I have had a 6505 cab with the sheffield 1200's and it honestly sounded like crap.  I have an old cab with HH premier 80's in it, but they're not that flash either...Not really a fan of 'celestion desigened' or 'custom celestions...'

I'm on the lookout for 2nd hand cabs at the moment, and since no V30 cabs are popping up, I need an alternative speaker option.

If nothing else pops up, the choice will be out of the Randall V30, the Framus Dragon V30, or something like a Marshall 1960A... (The cheaper V30 cabs are the Randall 4x12CV for $1,400 and the Framus Dragon Cab for $1,499 rrp, and the marshall is ~$1,500)

Any one of these seem better than the rest?

Thanks everyone!

Dan

You can get brand new Marshall V30 cabinets for about $1500 if it's the V30's you really want.

I'd suggest something like a Marshall AX cabinet (not to be confused with an AVT cabinet). Has 25W Greenbacks in them and they work extremely well with 5150's/6505 or in my case a JSX. Really tight ballsy sound.

I have a 1960TV (tall vintage) with greenbacks, that I reckon sounds the best with a 5150. Ive had every cabinet under the sun, and this one suits me the best. Welcome to borrow it for a trial if you like.

Ok,

Thanks guys for the advice :)  Very much appreciated!  I'll have a bit of a look around and see what I can find.

Thanks for the offer Perry.  I'll definitely keep that in mind  :D

Cheers again,

Dan

For the record, many people have asked if I can build cabinets. Ive always said one day I may, but not just yet.

Im open to the idea now if anyone is interested. Wont be cheaper than lets say a Marshall cab, but will definately have more options available.

1) would need GOOD wheels.
2) Imagine that heavy thing getting away from you on a load in ramp.

Yeah, they weigh 50kg's. Apparently wheels change the tone of the cabinet. I guess some people tilt their cabs on the side when playing for the same wood to ground tone, but I don't know if you get the same tone or not..
Definitely the best cabinet I've used though.

I'm sorry but you'd have to be a bit of a wanker not to sacrifice 0.1% of the sound for the convenience of having wheels.

Therefore your band mates hate you. Unless you carry it by yourself, in which case they laugh at you for being a stingy cunt.

Or they cower in the face of his magnificent man-strength.
My hands are choking, my knife is broken.
An orgasm is what I need.
Your blood is spilling, the sight is thrilling.
To cum I need to see you bleed.

Use a sack trolley. If I had access to welding gear and materials I could just build a trolley for carrying such boxes.

Buy VaderCabinets.
Trust me Dan, these cabs destroy. You dont want a cab that breaks up and farts when pushed.

Cheers Val,

I have heard great things about your cab from a number of people... :)

Where do I get one from?  Didn't you get yours from the US?

Cheers,

Dan

I agree with Val. Vader for the win. I hate speakers that break up too much.
What cab you got now?
The Vader cab runs the Eminence v128 also known as the v12. great speaker.
Another option is to buy 4x Eminence speakers & wire em into the cab you already have. The v128 is great, also the Texas Heat & the Cannibas Rex by Eminence are totally tits.
I have 2 Texas Heats & 2 Cannibas Rex speakers in my quad  :headbang:
The v128 only comes in 8ohm, the Texas Heat & Cannibas Rex come in either 8 or 16ohm.  ;)

Also front loading any of these speakers will help you as well.

Another option which is a good addition to get the woof out of the bottom end is a high pass filter between the head & the cab. I have 3 myself. One for me 1 for our other guitarist & 1 spare that I lend out. If you are interested I can build you one.
It will turn your bass knob into a useable low mid knob  ;)

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies.  Well currently, I am using my Laney 4x12 from my VH100R half stack.  Sadly it is the one before they used V30's, ad I believe they are HH premier 60's...?

I came across a Blackstar oversized V30 cab for $1,200 which I thought was a steal, and I am speaking with a fellow about a Rivera V30 4x12 for about $700ish as well.  Problem is, I need one in the next 2 weeks or so, therefore I can't really wait for a Vader or something, unless I can borrow a cab for recording.  (I may be able to though...)

I don't know that much about eminence speakers to be honest.  I was pretty set on V30's, or as Perry said, possibly greenbacks...

That filter sounds tops mate - I don't find the 6505 that woofy with the TS in front of it, although with an oversized cab it was a little boomy...

Thanks again Guys,

Dan

Oversized cabs will do that. What are you tuned to? Lower tunings have more woof.

I have the Laney cab also and was thinking of changing speakers (possibly swamp thangs or a combination). Is it worth it? How much difference do the speakers make compared to the construction/materials of the cab? I am assuming speakers have a bigger impact.
