Soundproofing
« on: January 07, 2010, 07:41:36 PM »
Hey everyone.

Does anyone know what the best way to go about soundproofing is? materials wise, method etc.

Its your average room so can jam in it.

 :)

It all depends what degree of isolation you want.

Yeah, well I have a kit in there and a guitar amp.

Also, the window. That will take more levels of insulation i assume.

I left the venision blind over the window so it looks like a normal window from outside. Then packed the window area with pillows, then a sheet of styrofoam ;)
Whats your budget.
Old foam matresses are cheap/free big & quick. For jammin acoustics are not as important esp for drums.
Make sure the ceiling has insulation bats in it. The snare will smash it's way out through the roof otherwise  ;)
Bunnings sell acoustic insulation bats that work rather well. Cheaper option is fibreglass insulation bats, work great but make ya itchy as fuck.
Big blocks of foam are the easiest for absorbing sound, hence matresses.
Do some google searchin. Eltons book on acoustics is a killer book that explains it all in detail.
Best way is to build a room inside a room  ;)

Insulate the windows and roof cavity - Thats where most of your sound is escaping

Yeah good ideas...i'll have to experiment a bit, got roof bats

I was looking to spend no more than $200. Have any of yous stepped foot into Clark Rubber? i saw some nice thin sheets of rubber stuff and thought that may assist....

cheers for your input boys  :headbang:, i'll have to make it proof enough to suppress drums mostly.

hmmm

A thin sheet of rubber will do very little. You'd be better off lining your walls with a thick layer of dense foamy type material.

If you wanna sound proof to the extent that the law requires, you're basically fucked. From memory (JohnnyC will be able to give the exact figures) at the fence, the maximum noise level is about 65dB which is basically conversation level. The chances of proofing a room on a budget of $200 for band rehearsing to comply with these figures is nil.

If you have cool neighbours who won't complain then fuck it, just get some old mattresses and thick courtains to put up around the place purely out of courtesy and spend your $200 on something better...like a couple of bottles of this:

Just spend your $200 on 4 rehearsals at Elite or Soundworks  :hmm:

As Cyanide_Christ said, If your neighbours are cool you should be able to get away with jamming without too much soundproofing. Just be courteous. Don't play after 7pm on weeknights or 12pm on weekends and you should be right :)

i sp'd a 6x3metre shed 4 under a weeks pay..took me 2months caz i spent 2much time thinkin(lots o drinkin) but the trick is on a budget is 2 have LAYERS of wat eva u can ( carpet, foam, doonas, even cardboard ) as sound especially bass travels if u can break it down in barriers it can b hugely effective, its all about the space in between ur layers, polystyrene is awesome caz its dense as F*()) , fireproof, a good insulater heat wise and lightweight easy 2 fix or mount.and cheap too if u look at 2nd hand materials..good luck but b warned.... :cunning: :cunning:the less noise people can hear...the more ear plugs u'l go thru :D
Let there be blood !!!! just not my blood !!!

I dont understand a lot of what was said above, but polystyrene is NOT fireproof!
It burns like a mofo and releases a toxic black smoke when it does.

Yeah good advice including the Scotch..

Problem is the neighbours house is made from virtually paper, thin vaneer crap...most of the street is..Gosnells for ya.
Its gonna have to get done eventually, and buying a 3 grand electronic drum kit is impossible right now, or well..

I'll give Clark Rubber another more serious looky and i'll see.

The quality of most houses in Perth is shit. Real shit >:(, i dont even hit that hard and the sound is bullshit loud.

I've also heard that lots and lots of egg cartons stuck inside out in the walls works well...?

The new electro kit sounds better than all this fucking around though, doesn't it :p
