Perth Local Metal CD?
« on: March 27, 2006, 03:35:52 PM »
Whilst doing my usual Sunday perusals on the web, came across a '2005 Wollongong Local Music CD' which had tracks from a heap of the local bands from the past year and it was available for free from music stores about Sydney and surrounding areas.

Have no idea if it was ever done here or it has ever been thought about but thought I'd bring it up here for discussion!

So, has there ever been one? Or has there ever been talk of one?
I reckon it's a brilliant idea...
Only fools think they won't be fooled again!

perth has so many amazing and talented musicians. it would be great to capture them all on one cd.

maybe even a live cd of all the perth metal bands playing at several local shows would be an idea instead of spending time recording in a studio. either way it's an excellent idea and a great way to expose perth metal to other australians metal fans

There have been 3 "Left Of Centre" CDs which were pretty good, but it was a mix of the hard rock and metal scenes, so there wasn't a whole lot of 'tr00' metal. Had some cool shit though, and it's been a while since those CDs so it would be good to get a new one going, and preferably on the heavier side.

^ all u need is $1600 for the pressing and distro

and about $500 -$600 to master all the tracks

anybody up for it ? maybe organise a fundraiser ?

Certainly a fundraiser event or two would be a good idea looking at those costs.

^ of course u can,  but is it gonna be a fully professional disc ?

here's what u get for $1600

500 CDs at $2 each : $1000
( cds with professionally printed 4 page booklets)

$600 is for servicing : This means MGM will post 200 copies of the cd to major radio stations and all the important people that needs to hear it

Granted for $600 MGM have been noted by a few bands to be pretty lazy in what they do . The other option would be to go to Diskbank and get 500 cd copies for $950 i think and then get a AMD : australian music directory and about $300 worth of stamps and service the product urself by sending it thru to radio stations and stuff from the AMD.

best person to ask how to arrange something like this would be Mr Dyson as he runs prime cuts records  :)

There was a Perth Metal CD with all local bands called "Metal from the Bottom of the Earth" released in 2001 with bands like Pathogen, Enforce, Maxi P, Modus Vivendi, Voyager, Centaur and a whole lot more I cant remember right now :-/

here's a no brainer idea :

Get 15 bands with one track each :

15 bands will cough out $130 each for the pressing distro and mastering

each band will get 10 cds ( 150 cds all up (350 cds left to distro / service )each which they can sell at $20 (for 15 tracks it's pretty cheap ) to cover the cost and profit alittle ($200 - $130 = $70) at their own gigs or to their friends

There will be 350 cds left of which 150 of them can be distributed around Perth for sale and 200 to be serviced around major metal friend radio stations and amongst promoters and booking agencies.

all profits from the sale of 150 will go straight back in pressing even more copies of the cd for distro/sale

What'd u reckon people ?

and it was available for free

:)

I get the idea it wasn't one made up for money making purposes, rather exposure purposes....
The question is, are bands ready to cough up for exposure and not direct money back - but possible money back in the future via more attendance at gigs and more album purchases....?

looks like a good idea on paper still. ive got a fair few friends who'd be very interested in picking up such a cd

i reckon $130 is fuck all for abit of exposure , 1/8 page ads in xpress cost $200ish and do very little for the band. whereas 500 cds around town and overeast presents a very good marketing and exposure strategy .

but the problem is by giving it away for free u risk people wasting the 500 cds by being selfish and taking one to many cds for themselves , and alot of people will miss out. i know from experience that when a band gives out a free demo a lot of them get wasted in the bin or chucked away just because it's free, not too mention heaps of people take advantage of the situation.

i reckon chuck 30secs -1min samples of each band on a specifically created myspace/pure volume account would be a good way to expose such bands.

if u guys are serious about this , i'll be keen to get the ball rollling ,i'll speak to dyson about it.  i 'm sound engineer as well so i'll be able to master all the tracks at either MGM mastering studio or another place for less than what u would pay for someone else .

also i'm sure Ryan from chaos divine would be good to do the artwork as well.

^

are u for real dude ? do u know how many bands get offered record deals/gigs or tours based on myspace sites ? also heaps of people start attending a band's show after checking out their myspace ( some bands have over 10000 fans on their myspace and they keep spreading the word ). maybe u havne't plugged ur myspace site or made enough contacts thru there but i know for certain that alot of bands are tapping up the contacts u can find on myspace . Quite a few bands have been signed up by labels based on the strength of their myspace site , and i know some tour promoters in perth looking to bring bands from overeast to perth do their basic research by checking out other bands' myspace accounts

A band i'm mixing right now is set to release a split EP with a band overeast and probably going overeast to tour with them purely based on the fact that they found them on myspace and like them alot.

That sounds like an awesome idea, a cd that entirely showcases Perth's best heavy metal music. But let's make it only metal, no hard rock or "cores".  ;)

A while ago I was toying with the idea of releasing a compilation of the history of Perth's metal scene (going back to SFD, Choke, Rawkus, Vanadium etc) and use it as a fundraiser for Heritage FM.
Unfortunately it got shelved due to lack of time.

I reckon it's a great idea.  It staggers me trhat Evil butterfly thought of it.   ;D

We are on the new Underearthed CD and so getting exposure over east already, but I'd definately pay out to be on any compilation you clowns can come up with.  Any exposure is good exposure.

its deffintly a good idea, i have mates who i am trying to get into metal, so instead of lending them 15 local cds, i could lend em something like that. I would buy it, and a benefit gig would be good as well, maybe all the atendants get a cd and entry for a special price

Woah Beast, couldn't be further from the truth.

Myspace is one of the best tools for getting exposure around, the hardcore scene lives on it, and look how big that is :P.

If bands swallow their pride.. they can use it wisely and do well off it.
