What do you want to see at a gig?
« on: December 02, 2011, 10:09:03 PM »
What would make a gig special for you? Does the line-up make a big difference, or is the venue more important? Would a raffle entice you, or a free sausage sizzle perhaps? A stand-up comedian or fire breathing?

What makes you pick one gig over another?

Yeah the usual pretty much, decent venue with decent bands.

Less Freo gigs too, I understand people out that way have to trek it into the city but it's no different for people north of the river. There's also the transport side of things too, if you're drinking you're either up for a HUGE cab fare or have to leave the gig before the headliner is finished in order to get the last trains home. Pretty much why I don't bother with Freo gigs unless its an international act these days.

Not to mention the only decent venue down there is the railway, and the sound guy there doesnt know his arsehole from his earhole and the beer is more expensive than amps despite being a dingy shithole

I liked the railway last time we went, Silent Knight were playing along with Morphica (and others, but cant remember right now >.<) sound was really good I thought.. the fact you could hear the singer, especially since it was mainly clean vocals was good for a change. Going to a gig I like the atmosphere the most I guess, a good bill is a must of course but I tend to go to gigs where the acts can really work the crowd, seems to always be a better show :)
May my weary soul find release for a while, at the moment of death I will smile.

for me, its purely about the bands. I dont care what venue, I can have fun at all of them. When deciding whether to go to a gig or not, its the lineup I look at and nothing else - if theres only one band Im interested in, they have to be a good one (Psychonaut, Chaos, Enforce, Voyager etc), but if there are 2 bands Im half keen on seeing theres a good chance you'll see me there... unless its in Freo. Fire breathing, sausage sizzles, raffles and all that are just gimmicks as far as Im concerned.

If you really want to get people through the door Rowland, free beer would be the ultimate incentive.  ;)

I never understood why we seem to be the only band in town who likes to bring stage props to make shows more visual.  At the last gig we had the Demon keyboard stand and the two shaped keyboards, shaped kickskins and a demon facade hanging onto the front of the kit, our axe micstand and our two robot statues stage right and left.  If we can do it, other bands should be able to go to the effort too, it's a bunch of work to haul the stuff around, but it makes the gigs more fun to watch.  It doesn't have to be anything too strenuous, CDT in their horrid masks are always good value to watch.

Anyway, that's the sort of thing I would like to see more of, bands making more of an effort to make the stage more than just a raised piece of floor.

Bands I like will get me to a gig. More black metal! The venue is a secondary consideration. But I also work in the events industry so a lot of Friday\Saturday nights are already booked out way in advance.

What keeps me away from a gig is a shitty atmosphere (prick bouncers), average bands, distance (I live not far from Kwinana), shitcore (whatever that is) and being literally pushed out by prick bouncers - lights on the moment the last band finishes.

Agreed with Jez. Go the extra mile. Stand above the crowd. It takes some effort for a punter to go to and get home from a gig. People are paying to see you. Do something to make them want to pay to see you play again. It's the only way you will make a living from music.

More people in the crowd.

ALL gigs are better when all of your friends are there. Its the punters who make the night great!

here here. At the occasional gig where my entire crew is there (all 12-15 or so of us) the nights are ALWAYS better.

Haha. I'd pay to see that. Considering that Jez is larger than life you'll need a lot paper.

I can see those at home. For free.

I don't have a lot of talent, but I have a long wheelbase van.

Jez, cant you make the extra effort & make a papier mache stage prop version of yourself?
Inspiring idea, I shall look into it.  Better make it robust, I am sure that when it is not in use on the stage you will want to take it home for a little private time.
