Space-rock San Franciscans Wooden Shjips will bring their mesmerising sonic explorations to The Bakery on Friday March 30.
With smatterings of kraut-rock and a lot of psych, Wooden Shjips bring to mind Suicide or an even-more-drugged-up Stooges. There?s fuzzed-out guitars, feedback blasts, hauntingly ethereal organ and rock-solid, driving drums. It?s great traveling music, whether for a road trip or a trip of an entirely different kind.
Their last record, West, is more accessible than Wooden Shjips? previous output. The band?s sound hasn?t changed significantly, but songs have got tighter and more succinct. And while West is definitely more accessibly, as Pitchfork wrote, ?the album isn't really a collection of riffs and wails and choruses; it's more a muscular sort of vibe-out ? badass ambient music?.
The experience of Wooden Shjips has been likened to ?maboroshi?, the Japanese phenomenon similar to seeing a mirage or hallucinating in time. In a live setting, it?s easy to see why ? expect an astral journey of swirling noise and devastating rhythm that leaves you wondering if what you?re witnessing is, in fact, actually happening.
