General discussion / Recording!
« on: August 17, 2011, 01:26:39 PM »
Hey guys, don't mean to spam but I need some bands to record so I thought I'd just post my page up again for people to see, this time in the general section.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Simon-Mitchell-Recording-EngineerProducer/117085555040068

Shortly there will be a track from Prescient's forthcoming EP posted up in the music section but for now, have a listen to the Chaos track for an idea of my work (mixed by Jens Bogren but these days my mixes are closer to that quality than they are to the other 2 tracks which I did years and years ago when I was a bit of a noob, also Jens had great things to say about the quality of the recordings I sent him which is half the reason why the Chaos album sounds so good!).

Also, Psychonaut's long, long, long...long awaited album is heading into mix stage very shortly and that is going to sound fucking fantastic. I can't wait to nail that one and get it out there as it sounds really really good.

Finally, Wrath Of Fenrir's EP is making good progress and will hopefully be finished fairly soon. That one also sounds pretty bonza so I'm looking forward to getting that one on my resume too!

The above mentioned recordings are all available to listen to at my joint for prospective clients but obviously they can't be posted on the internet until they are finished and released so drop me a line if you are thinking about recording and you want to come check out more of my work.

Email - simwk@hotmail.com

Cheers!
Simon.

Equipment for sale / Morley Bad Horsie 2 wah FS
« on: July 19, 2011, 03:19:47 PM »
As the title suggests.

Pretty cool wah. Obviously it's the Steve Vai signature wah and it's spring operated so you don't have to push a button to engage it, you just start wah'ing!

Has a contour button which I find gives a more aggressive sound with a larger sweep.

It has very minor cosmetic wear but is in perfect working order.

c/w Ashton power supply - $110.

Ask Ormsby / Blackstar speaker emulated outputs vs mic'd cabinet
« on: July 17, 2011, 02:45:11 AM »
So JohnnyC and I were curious about the comparison between the speaker emulated output and a mic'd up cabinet for both the HT20 head and the HT-DISTX distortion pedal. I quickly knocked up some sections from The Human Connection with programmed drums and a DI'd bass and recorded guitars using the aforementioned techniques. Johnny then put together the vid. Check it out!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7bfrywzDhg

The emulated outputs sound really good but I think there's just something lacking. They're quite clear and nice but I think personally I'd just use them as added layers under mic'd guitars just for extra thickness. They're great for demo's and assorted recordings when you can't be fucked setting up a cabinet/mics or if you have to limit noise.

Thoughts?

Equipment for sale / PEAVEY JSX Joe Satriani model FOR SALE
« on: May 13, 2011, 12:04:31 PM »
Selling my 120W Peavey JSX head.

In a nutshell it's like a hotted up 3 channel 5150 markII.

FEATURES:

- 120 watts into 16, 8, or 4 ohms (switchable)
- Four 6L6s and four 12AX7s
- Power amp switchable to use EL34s or 6L6GSs
- Three footswitchable channels
- Clean channel: volume, bass, mid, treble
- Crunch channel: gain and volume, bass, mid, treble EQ and FAT switch
- Ultra channel: gain and volume, bass, mid, treble EQ and FAT switch
- Noise gate control for both distortion channels
- Master volume
- Footswitchable effects loop with send and return controls
- Resonance and Presence controls
- Line out with level control

Comes with Footswitch.

Now, it does have some minor damage to the rear of the chassis but it is in perfect working order (damage on the outside, its innards are fine).

Only selling because after 4 or 5 years of this amp and a few years of the 5150II that I had before it, I've decided it's about time for a change. In the past though, whenever I've had urges to buy new amps, those urges have been quickly quelled after cranking this beast up in the rehearsal room. It's a pretty monstrous sounding head and if you've seen Chaos Divine, you know what it's capable of!

I'm hoping for $1300 but any serious offer will be considered.

I don't come on here all that often so if interested, call me on 0431 936 079 or email me at simwk@hotmail.com

Cheers!

General discussion / "THC - The Pedal"

Hey people, just thought I'd show you my new guitar pedal which was made by JohnnyC. Obviously I wouldn't start a thread about any pedal purchase but this one is worth checking out. Those of you who love the movie The Human Centipede as much as Johnny and I do will appreciate this one of a kind monstrosity of a guitar pedal. Check it out!

Western Australia / New CHAOS DIVINE track online
« on: December 15, 2010, 03:11:37 PM »
Hey guys, we've just uploaded One Door the first track off our upcoming album onto our facebook and myspace pages. The album will be titled THE HUMAN CONNECTION and is set for release around March/April of 2011. It's been a pretty long process from recording studio to release but we think the hard work really shines through in the quality of the album.

Recorded and engineered by myself at Underground Studios, mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden.

Hope you enjoy!

General discussion / Chaos Update
« on: September 17, 2010, 12:20:19 PM »
Howdy folks,

For whoever may be interested I thought I'd just let you know what's happening with the band.

In June/July we hit Underground Studio in Booragoon for a brutal 4 weeks of recording. The recording was engineered by myself with assistance from my good friend Troy Nababan and the result was pretty spectacular. The sounds going into the recording machine were great and un-mixed sounded awesome already which lent itself to a very high quality recording right from the start.

Then it was time to get it mixed and the man in charge of mix duties is none other than Jens Bogren of Fascination Street Studios in Sweden. With Jens at the mix helm, the album was in pretty safe hands considering his previous works include Opeth's Watershed and Ghost Reveries albums, Symphony X's Paradise Lost and Katatonia's The Great Cold Distance just to name a few.

Having received the first mix we can tell you it's a monstrous sounding album and the songs are a real step up from our previous efforts. We are chomping at the bit to get this thing out as we have worked extremely hard to get our music and sound to this standard.

The release date is yet to be confirmed but it shouldn't be too far away.

Stay tuned peoples!
Cheers.

Equipment for sale / WTT Boss GE-7
« on: May 28, 2010, 01:03:04 AM »
Just wondering if anyone may be keen to trade a GE-7 EQ pedal for some kind of overdrive/booster pedal. I've been using the GE-7 for boosts for a while now and it works fine, I'm just bored and want to try something new.

So yeah, if anyone has an overdrive pedal that can boost volume, up the gain a bit and has some sort of ability to shape the tone, even if only in the form of a "tone" knob, then let me know if you want to trade for my 7 band EQ pedal.

Cheers!

Sound Advice / Engineer/studio for hire
« on: November 26, 2009, 01:57:45 AM »
Hey all. As a small number of you may already be aware, I'm studying sound at waapa, having just finished the second year of the three year course.

After having worked on a few projects over the last couple of years, all of which have received praise from my peers and from other musos, I feel I am in a position to advertise myself as a freelance recording engineer (albeit a student engineer).

Past jobs include Primea's Optical Illusions - http://www.myspace.com/primea13
I also mixed Sight Transcend's For The Sake Of Your Tommorrow - http://www.myspace.com/sighttranscend
I'm also currently recording Psychonaut's upcoming album which should hopefully be finished and released in the coming months.

Over the last couple of years I've worked closely with an incredible engineer who has around 25 years experience in the industry and we have plans to work towards developing a more permanent and professional relationship as mentor and assistant (an opportunity I am extremely grateful for). Consequently this means I have access to his high quality professional studio.

As far as prices go, I'm flexible. My current rate is $30 per hour. This does not include studio hire. This is a very cheap rate and as my experience grows, inevitably the rate will too. The use of the particular studio I mentioned earlier will cost roughly an extra $700 per day, however on certain dates when the owner is working away from the studio, the rate will be significantly lower.

I understand that a lot of bands don't have huge amounts of money so what I'd suggest when there are budget restrictions is to record drums at the studio, then I can record the rest of the project at home (whether it be my house or the house of a member of the band). I have a very capable setup.

One more thing I'd like to mention is that as I'm trying to earn a name for myself in the industry, my main goal is to make great sounding records no matter how much I have to work (within reason of course!). So what I'm saying is I don't just down tools when the clock hits 8 hours, I'll continue until I feel the job is sufficiently done.

So if you're looking at recording an EP/album/demo, please feel free to contact me on 0431 936 079. My email address is simwk@hotmail.com

Cheers guys,
Simon.

Equipment for sale / Boss OC-3 and CH-1 for sale
« on: June 29, 2009, 12:42:05 AM »
Boss OC-3 Super Octave, hardly used, comes with box - $150

Boss have 2 octave stomp box pedals, the OC-2 and the OC-3. The OC-2 is crap as the tracking is shocking. The OC-3 however has MUCH better tracking and has some extra features like the "polyphonic" function, and an overdrive section. It can also be used for bass (has 2 inputs - 1 guitar, 1 bass).

I think it's a great sounding pedal and if I weren't such a retard when it comes to playing and pushing pedals with my feet at the same time, I'd use it a whole lot more. Unfortunately it just sits on my board and doesn't get used.

Boss Super Chorus CH-1, a bit older but still works absolutely fine. No box. - $100

Nice and simple unit. Sounds good. Again, only selling because it doesn't get used (in fact it's just sitting in my Boss EQ pedal's box).

PM me if interested, or call me on 0431 936 079

Cheers,
-Simon

General discussion / Another housemates needed topic
« on: June 22, 2009, 01:01:32 PM »
Owner selling current home, housemates buggering off so I need a place asap.

I'm clean, tidy, and quiet. Around the $100 per week mark is my budget but will pay more if need be.

Preferably a half decent area where I don't have to worry about being broken into and having my shit stolen. I'm not too fussed about areas though, just as long as it's not dodgy.

So if anyone is in a similar situation and needs to find a place, hit me up. Alternatively, if someone has a spare room and wants to fill it, give us a yell.

Cheers,

General discussion / Uni Dropouts
« on: May 05, 2006, 11:24:37 PM »
After recently deciding to drop out of uni for the 3rd time (second course), I was curious as to how many of you have dropped out and how many attempts at uni it took to figure out what you actually wanted to do? Or am I the only one that can't get his shit together?

I tried a science degree twice where I failed 1st semester, so put it off for 6 months, then tried it again and passed, then failed 2nd semester so canned that one for good. Then I started nursing last year and made it into 3rd semester. I got to my first real prac experience and thought that cleaning up shitty arses and having to care for people and organise a million things at once was not really my thing.

How about youz cunts? There must be plenty of uni dropouts, given the demographic. :P ;D
