Interface for my PC - Need some help/advice please...
« on: February 28, 2010, 10:27:44 PM »
Hey all,

I'm planning on getting an interface to use with my computer to track ideas and riffs, but I'd also like to be able to record fairly polished finished songs...

Problem is that I don't really know what I need out of an interface.  There's so many brands and so many models, I really don't know what to pursue...

I want to be able to record guitar parts, say a rythym and a lead, bass parts and to use it for some acoustic ideas.  I was planning on doing strings/drums/others as programmed instruments.  It doesn't have to be the best in the world, but I'd like it to do the job pretty well...

I guess I have about $200 - $300 to throw at it, and since I have no firwire port, it will have to be usb.  Not really keen on getting a firewire card put in unless its significantly better...

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?  Not really concerned with software at the moment, but are most programs compatible with most interfaces?

Cheers everyone,

Dan

Most basic interfaces will work, and USB shouldnt be a problem for what you want to do.
Digidesign (mbox) and Edirol would be two brands to look out for, but with the DD stuff, youll need to check your computer ststa as it can be a little picky as to what it works with. This is to ensure reliability.

Btw, you can get fire wire cards off ebay for $10 if you need one.

Bro I've told you, I have a spare PCI firewire card you can have, and yeah, it'll definitely be better  :P

The line6 toneports are great for guitar and bass parts as well as vocals when used with Podfarm or Gearbox. Yuo can also download expansion pack to give your sound more options. You'll have a shit load of amps and probly wont use them all. But if you are after a particular sound it makes things so much easier. As I found out last night when I was creating my own guitar presets.

yeah the line 6 stuff is great value for money for sure.
if yer only recording one or 2 tracks at a time you dont really need to get anything with more than 2 ins.

Hey Guys,

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I haven't got an interface yet.  Although, I have narrowed it down to 2 choices;

Focusrite Sapphire6 - For $249 Brand new

or a

Edirol UA25-EX - For $225 second hand...

Just not really sure which one to go for...  Any advice would be great  :)

Cheers,

Dan

Hey mate. Not real sure, probably much of a muchness.
Go the one that has easier/better tech support. ie: 30mins as opposed to 1hr on hold time.

at the end of the day though make sure you get the best pre's you can i guess.
